Junior Warriors get first win of the year

Fullback Kevin Locke delivered three key moments in the last nine minutes to guide the Vodafone Junior Warriors to their first win of the NYC season at Mt Smart Stadium tonight.

With the scores locked at 16-16, Locke scorched through out wide for a 71st minute try and then converted to give his side a 22-16 lead.

And with only a minute to go, a Locke penalty stretched the lead to eight points, the 24-16 margin a huge turnaround after being towelled up 52-4 – a record defeat – by Manly at Brookvale Oval last Sunday.

Tries to winger Bill Tupou and centre Siuatonga Likiliki had give the home said a 10-6 edge at halftime, Likiliki making it three tries in as many games so far this season.

Toyota Cup Full Time - Eels 32, Raiders 44
Ross Smart
Pirtek Parramatta Eels Media Unit

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have finished on the wrong end of the Toyota Cup scoreboard for the second straight week, losing to the Raiders 44-32 at Parramatta Stadium..

The Raiders scored eight tries to six in what was an attack-oriented encounter, the defending Premiers fighting their way back into the match with five straight second half tries which turned an 18-point defecit into a 12 point victory.

The Eels burst out of the blocks, with tries to Shaun Cox and Mitchell Johnson seeing the Eels lead the defending Premiers by 12 points after nine minutes.

The Cox try came off a sweeping backline movement, while Johnson touched down under the posts off a Daniel Cross break to give Daniel Mortimer the easiest of conversions.

The Raiders however came roaring back and posted three quick tries to steal the lead by the miway point of the first half.

The first was scored by winger Steve Naughton, the second went the way of Daniel Vidot while the third was an easy put down under the posts to replacement Sam Mataora.

Fullback Josh Dugan only managed to convert the Mataora try, however the Raiders had their noses in front at 14-12.

Eels lock Jason Baitieri was causing the Raiders defence no end of troubles in the first half and it was on the back of one incisive run that he helped his side re-take the lead, scoring in the 28th minute of the match to make it 18-14 the Eels way.

Mortimer then scored back to back four pointers to see the Eels head into the break leading by 28 points to 14.

Uncharacteristic Raider errors early in the tackle count helped the Eels maintain pressure early in the second half, and that pressure reaped rewards with winger Domenic Nasso flying high to bag the Eels sixth try seven minutes after the break.

Trailing 32-14 the Raiders had to act and act they did, replacement Diego Codyre charging his way over for Dugan to convert, narrowing the deficit to 12 points at 32-20.

And when Dugan did the same ten minutes later, scoring in a near identical position to Codyre before converting his own try, the Eels had lost their advantage with the Raiders now just six points down.

The pain continued for the Eels, with Canberra gifted a try after a fifth tackle grubber kick took a wicked deflection off the boot of Pat O’Hanlon and into the arms of Matt McIlwrick who scored under the posts. Dugan’s conversion levelled it up at 32-apiece.

Further tries to Dugan and centre Drury Low secured the points for the Raiders, who eventually triumphed 44-32.

Magnificent NYC second-half comeback

A determined second half display from a slow start enabled the Toyota Cowboys Under 20s side to reel in a rampaging Melbourne Storm and secure a last minute 29-28 victory in the Toyota Cup.

Trailing 6-18 at the break, having conceded three tries to the Storm, the young Cowboys fell further behind in the 45th minute to trail 6-24 before the fightback started.

Playing much more disciplined football in the final 35 minutes, the Cowboys made the most of their opportunities to score three tries and level the scores 28-28 with five minutes to go.

Ben Cronin, who had earlier kicked a sideline goal to bring the scores level, coolly landed a winning field goal with just thirty-nine seconds to go to the rapture of the home crowd.

DRAGONS YOUNG GUNS REGISTER FIRST WIN FOR 2009
Sunday, March 29, 2009

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have registered their first victory for season 2009 defeating the Sharks 38-12 at WIN Jubilee Oval.

The Dragons scored seven tries to the Sharks two in a dominant display.

In contrast to recent weeks the Dragons young guns were first to register points in just the fifth minute. A penalty on the Sharks line of the Dragons gave a full set to the home side and they didn’t disappoint scoring on the third tackle through back rower Clifford Morris. It was just a simple ball back on the inside from Beau Henry that put Morris over to score 15m in from the eastern touchline. Fullback Henry Raiwalui couldn’t convert with the Dragons in front 4-nil.

The lead didn’t last long with the Sharks answering back just four minutes later. Off the back of a penalty it was front row forward Johnny Mannah who seemed to just stroll through and score under the posts. Winger Nathan Stapleton converted to put the Sharks in front 6-4.

Back to back tries from the Sharks extended the lead through hooker Lancen Joudo who took the last tackle option of scooting out of dummy-half and burrowed over to score. Stapleton again converted with the lead now 12-4 after 14 minutes.

In a match where defence wasn’t holding up to well the Dragons scored their second try of the afternoon through winger Joe Vickery in the 19th minute. Attacking the Sharks line Henry took the ball to the line and threw a beautiful cut-out ball to Vickery who strolled over to score in the north-western corner. Raiwalui couldn’t convert with the score staying at 12-8.

Just two minutes later the Dragons were able to go into the lead through Vickery once again. He benefited again from Henry who sent him through the gap and he went through to score. Raiwalui converted to put the home side in front 14-12.

The remainder of the half continued to be played from end to end but either side could register any further points.

The opening to the second half was all the Dragons with back rower Brad Hudson going over to score 10m in from the western touchline. It was brute strength from the blonde-haired back rower who carried three players over the line. Raiwalui smartly converted with the lead extended out to 20-12 after 44 minutes.

The match looked to have been wrapped up in the 59th minute with Arncliffe Scots junior Dean Whare going over to score. It was a great individual try with the centre putting on a great step with an in and away to score 10m in from the western touchline. Raiwalui again converted to put the red and whites in front by 20 points, 32-12.

The final icing on the cake was put on in the 77th minute through winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa. Fai-Fai Loa burst through and scored 15m in from the western touchline. Raiwalui again converted and the Dragons had registered their first win of the year by 38 points to 12.
