Dragons NYC Too Strong for Broncos

The St George Illawarra Dragons Under 20’s have tonight registered their second victory of the season defeating the Brisbane Broncos 34-16 at Suncorp Stadium.

The young Dragons scored six tries to the Broncos three in a comprehensive victory with two tries each to Kane Linnett and Shannon Wakeman.

The Dragons opened the scoring in the fifth minute thanks to fullback Henry Raiwalui. Centre Kane Linnett burst through the Broncos defensive line on half, raced 40m drew the fullback and passed the ball inside for Raiwalui who was trailing in support. Beau Henry converted from in front to take the 6-0 early lead.

The Broncos hit back just four minutes later on the back of a Dragons penalty and fullback Dane Copley sliced through three Dragons defenders on the goal line. Dane Gagai converted to bring the home team level.

The Broncos continued to mount pressure and after back to back goal-line drop-outs, Broncos centre Gagai found a gap in the Dragons defence and scored 10m to the right of the uprights. Gaigai then converted his own try to extend the Broncos lead to 12-6.

The Dragons re-gained control and scored the next three tries all converted by Henry to head into the half-time break with a 12 point lead.

Linnett in the 21st minute on the back of a Broncos error. Winger Max Dudley dropped a mid-field bomb from Henry and the Dragons quickly spread the ball left where Linnett crossed 10m in from the left hand sideline.

Winger Joe Vickery crossed in a similar position 10 minutes later when the Dragons again shifted the ball left and Vickery picked up a sloppy pass from the ground and raced away to score untouched.

The Dragons again found themselves in good field position just before half time thanks to a strong run from winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa. A strong charge from Shannon Wakeman saw him crash over just two minutes before half-time, the Dragons leading 24-12.

The Broncos were the first to score in the second half; it was Gagai again who showed great footwork and strength to crash over on the back of a 50m break away run winger Tyson Brookes. The centre was unable to convert his own 50th minute try, the score remaining 24-16.

The Dragons hit back two minutes later, Linnett also scoring his second try of the match 10m in from the left-hand sideline, over powering his opposite Josh Williams

The scores remained the same until five minutes before the end of play when Wakeman ran through some tiring Brisbane defence and raced away 20m to the try line untouched. Henry successfully converted, extending the Dragons lead to 34-16.

Eels Outpoint Roosters in Toyota Cup

The Eels did just enough to notch their second win of the Toyota Cup season, Daniel Mortimer playing a leading hand in his side’s 14-10 defeat of the Roosters.

In an error-riddled effort from both teams, the Eels scored first and last to secure their first win since round one, with Mortimer kicking three goals as well as setting up both Parramatta tries.

The Eels did themselves no favours early in the first half, simple handling errors early in the tackle count allowing the Roosters to dominate possession over the opening 20 minutes of play.

But while the Eels attack was faltering, their defence was nothing short of outstanding as they repelled wave after wave of Roosters attack to ensure the score remained locked at nil-all.

The deadlock was not broken until 12 minutes out from half time, when an inspired Mortimer run on the last tackle put Daniel Galati away to score the Eels first try. Mortimer then converted for a 6-nil lead.

The Roosters hit back before the break, centre Anthony Gelling getting the arms free on the sideline to put Tufuga Sa away in the corner. Josh Murray converted from the sideline to lock it up at 6-all.

The flow of possession swung in the Eels favour early in the second half but it ultimately made no difference as the Roosters forged ahead, centre Ryan Williamson scoring a 90 metre special after latching onto an intercept 10 metres out from his own line.

Mortimer was again in the thick of the action as the Eels scored their second to re-take the lead, the halfback’s grubber kick ricocheting off the feet of a defender and into the arms of Domenic Nasso who scored close into the posts.

The conversion gave the Eels a narrow two point lead at 12-10

Mortimer then stretched the lead to four with a penalty goal eight minutes out from full time, which the Eels managed to maintain despite a late Roosters surge at their line.

Souths Score right on full time through fullback Malcolm Webster, Warriors can't be happy with that. Webster converts his own try. Entertaining match full of attack and no defence at times.

FULL TIME:
Warriors 42
South Sydney 32

(half-time: Warriors 24-6 Souths)
