Round 4 v Storm

I've just watched the game again and OMG, Gough was putrid against us. In the space of 1 min, he missed a knock on from Coates when Guthos tried to pass the ball to Sloan over the top of Coates. He then penalised Luciano for jack shxt, then Sia for wrestling the neck (storm do this EVERY tackle, then penalised JDB when King dropped the ball cold. This was followed by penalty for a grapple on Blore (Guthos & Tupoloti were claiming the exact same thing and got nothing), this was followed by a series of 6 agains that I'm still trying to understand why.
Oh..... and if we had any other 7 in that first 20 mins, we would have been down 18 points. Ilias was a beast with his online defence.
I thought all those penalties against us were justified.

While I am being very general, most penalties are justified. The issue is the blatant inconsistency where a similar or worse offense is not penalised and more often than not to the benefit of the NRL darling teams.

The stupid 6 again rule is so open to manipulation it is laughable. Refs call them to the point where 1 team is gassed from tackling and concedes 3 or 4 tries, game is over then the 6 agains and penalties get evened out but too late by then. Also coping a 6 again after the first tackle compared to the 3rd or 4th or position on the field makes a huge difference.

I'll throw a little bouquet at Kyle Flanagan as well this week. It's pretty obvious now that our halves' mandate this year is just to get the ball to our edges asap, which they did again. But Kyle was definitely more involved v the Storm and did some nice things, particularly in the 2nd half. One of his bombs got us an "escort" penalty (shame Val hit the post with his kick), and there was another sharp piece of blindside play with Gutho that could've easily created a try for Tui. And defensively both he and Ilias were solid. Better stuff

A minor but disappointing side note to an otherwise inspirational win from the Dragon boys. Chris Minns was spotted by Rothfield in the Storm dressing room. Now I can forgive him for being a Bulldogs supporter while the State Member for Kogarah-I live in Sharks territory and dislike them nearly as much as I hate the Bulldogs- but couldn't he at least adopt the Dragons as his second team while he is representing their area? Even if he visited both dressing rooms, there was no need for him to be anywhere near the Storm on Saturday- unless of course he was in election mode on behalf of Albo.

Yes, the penalties were, however, he ignored the Storm's exact same infringements when they were defending. If we flirted with the rules we infringed. If they way over the flirt line, crickets. There is a penalty in every ruck. It is what the ref chooses to penalise
Exactly this. Early in the game I noted a Storm player twisting one of our players around while he had his arm around his neck. At the time I thought it was dangerous but wasn't sure if it could be penalised. Lo and behold, later in the half we get pinged and reported for doing the same thing but, in my opinion, less aggressive. It's these sorts of things that piss me off in the current game.

Additionally, I've noticed that, not just in Dragons games, penalties don't start getting called consistently until the attacking team is within the 6 again range. So a defending team can perform a discrepancy once or twice outside the 40 meters, but once it hits that 40 meter point the 6 agains come thick and fast. It's almost like the refs are being lazy or it's easier to apply/hide the decision through repeat 6 agains. It needs to be looked at.

Same as ref chose to go very easy on Mahoney playing "bulldogs footy" with Atkinson's head.

Ref's discretion is a thing but that could have been crippling.

Merkin of a rule. Hate it with a passion. It is a refs gear shift lever so he/she can change momentum

Luke Patton is the boss of the MRC. Do you think Mahoney was ever going to be suspended? Luke Patten is a ........... Never forgave us for making the call that he was surplus to requirements. He screwed us when he was a video ref and has carried that pettiness into the MRC

Defence was the key here with Saints holding the Strom Tryless most of the 1st half with the Storm having quite a lot of ball in the Dragons 20. In the end Saints had 48 tackles on there line and kept Storm to 1 try which I am sure no team in the NRL would have achieved in a while except the Panthers. It was a huge effort from Saints.

The whole team played well and that mistake right after points off the kickoff from money man Tuipolotu led to a try moments later to the Storm, their only one mind you.

Flanno blooding these young guys well and hopefully making the old boys like Lawrie and RFM appreciate FG more so they can come in a play to their peak. Flanno looks to have so much confidence in the young kids and is giving them longer minutes and leaving them on at crucial times of the game which is great to see.

How good is it to have a captain that shows true leadership barking his orders and approaching the refs constantly when other team approach the ref. Cookie did the same.

I need to give credit where it is due and I honestly thought Badger would give that try to Katoa but she did not and we won the game. Who would have thought. Well done Kasey. It really goes to show how important the on-field refs call is before it goes upstairs as from memory Gough called it first. I can't believe the papers are blowing up about it. He clearly lost possession as we see interpreted these days.
