TOYOTA CUP ESCAPE WITH VICTORY IN FIERY AFFAIR

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have tonight come out on top in a very fiery affair 32-28 against the Eels at Parramatta Stadium.

The Dragons scored six tries to the Eels five with it being a match played very much from end to end.

The side was boosted with the return of 2008 Toyota Cup “Player of the Year” Trent Merrin who has been playing with Shellharbour in the NSW Cup but is still eligible for this competition.

The start to the match saw the Eels with possession and on just the fourth tackle they earned a penalty after back rower Jake Marketo lifted the Parramatta plater above the horizontal in the tackle. Starting the set well into Dragons territory the Eels ran a composed set and a charge forward by prop forward Mitchel Johnson proved to be too much for the Dragons and he crashed over to score just two minutes into the match. Halfback Daniel Mortimer had no problems converting from in front with the Eels in front 6-nil.

It didn’t take the young Dragons long to answer back and it was winger Joe Vickery who went over in the seventh minute. It was a simple move to the left hand side that saw the ball in the playmakers hands Beau Henry who cut out Kane Linnett on to Vickery who went round to score under the posts. Henry converted to level the scores at 6-all.

The Dragons went back to back with Linnett grabbing a try of his on just two minutes later. It was Merrin who got an offload out the back to Henry who then passed the ball on to Linnett who crashed over to score. Henry was unable to convert from the sideline with the Dragons now in front 10-6.

Against the run of play the Eels scored their second try of the night through winger Nathan Gardner. The mistake came with Linnett spilling the ball 30m out from the Eels line and Gardner pounced on the loose ball and ran 70m untouched to score in the south-western corner. Mortimer was unable to convert with scores level at 10-all.

A penalty in front of the upright earned the Eels their next two points with Mortimer electing to take the easy points on offer. The penalty came through Linnett who was penalised for holding on to the ball in the ruck area and the Eels now in front 12-10.

Gardner shortly grabbed his second try of the night after the Eels had four sets at the Dragons and as the onslaught almost came to an end a fifth tackle cross kick from Mortimer was spilled by Vickery and Gardner again pounced on the loose ball. Mortimer smartly converted from the western touchline to put the Eels out in front 18-10 after 27 minutes.

The remainder of the half was all the Dragons scoring two tries to push in front on the scoreboard. A break was made mid-field by interchange hooker Mitch Rein who busted through the lazy markers and the crafty hooker then was rewarded two tackles later when he went over to score. Henry couldn’t convert with the gap now closed to 18-14 after 32 minutes.

With just two minutes remaining the Dragons scored their fourth try of the night through Sam Campbell. It was just a simple set working down field and Campbell crashed over through some tired Eels defenders with Henry then converting the try with the red and whites going to the half-time break leading 20-18.

The second half started well for the visitors with Linnett picking up is second try of the match. A mistake by Eels hooker Daniel Galati gave the Dragons possession on the 40m line. It was on the fourth tackle when Henry took the ball to the line and double pumped it short to Henry Raiwalui who showed quick hands to get the ball away to Linnett who went over to score. Henry converted to extend the Dragons lead to 26-18 after 48 minutes.

In the 54th minute the Eels answered back through second rower Pat O’Hanlon. The Eels earned a repeat set after winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa was forced to take the ball dead from a grubber kick put through. From the next set it was not until the fifth play where the Eels produced a crisp backline movement with O’Hanlon receiving the ball and being able to carry two defenders across the line to score. Mortimer again converted to close the gap to 26-24

After a scuffle broke out after an Eels mistake both sides were reduced to 12 men with Merrin being sent to the sin-bin for his involvement with and Eels player also given a rest on the sideline. The Dragons were awarded the penalty and on just the third tackle hooker Cameron King used his strength to crash over from dummy-half. Henry converted to put the lead out to 32-24 after 64 minutes.

The Eels answered straight back with the try-scorer making a mistake on his own 35m line handing the Eels possession. It took the home side just two tackles to force their way over through centre Taniela Lasalo. With the centre looking to have been held up he managed to get the ball free and plant it down for a try. Mortimer couldn’t convert with the score now 32-28 after 69 minutes.

With both players returning from the sin-bin the match continued its fiery nature but the Dragons held on to with the tight fixture 32-28.

Roosters Crow Over Young Broncos

The WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have been beaten tonight by the Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Despite a vibrant start that included a try in the second minute, two costly defensive lapses before the halftime break proved telling as the Broncos went down 24-10.

The Broncos were well in the match as the second half began, down by just 12-10.

But two tries to the Roosters in the second 40 minutes ensured the two points would go to the home side.

With 20 minutes remaining the Roosters went out to an eight-point lead after centre Anthony Gelling scored, a reward for setting up a try in the first half.

They sealed it with a try with 10 minutes remaining when winger Sandor Earl got his second of the night.

The Broncos could not have asked for a better start, scoring a try against the run of play in the first set of six tackles.

Second rower Tariq Sims charged down a Roosters kick and dived on the ball, only to turn and flip it to five-eighth Todd Murphy, who ran 50 metres to score.

In the 21st minute Broncos halfback Rhys Matsen put his team further ahead after Dane Gagai had a pass knocked down that looked certain to produce a try.

From the ensuing possession Matsen dummied and stepped his way over close to the posts, Dane Gagai’s conversion making it 10-0.

Sims was placed on report for a grapple tackle.

But the Broncos would hand a halftime lead to the Roosters in the space of two minutes.

First Tom Pelo scored and then Earl crossed for the Roosters to bank a 12-10 advantage.

NYC Titans score big win over Cowboys

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans NYC (under-20s) side has continued its brilliant early season form with a 48-16 demolition of North Queensland at Dairy Farmers Stadium tonight.

The Titans scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to runaway with the match and register their fourth win from five matches this season.

Halfback Cody Walker scored two second half tries to put the result beyond doubt while winger Lachlan Creighton also crossed for a double.

The win ensures the Steve Murphy-coached Titans side will remain in the top-four of the NYC under-20s competition heading into next Friday night’s big clash against heavyweights Canberra at Skilled Park.

The Titans led 4-nil after eight minutes after a long cut-out pass from Walker helped put winger Creighton away in the left corner.

But the Cowboys hit back two minutes later through a converted try to five-eighth Michael Morgan.

Titans lock Kurt Foggo gave his side back the lead when he crashed over from close range and five-eighth Jordan Rankin added the extras for a 10-6 advantage.

Speedy fullback Jy Hitchcox extended that lead to 14-6 after 24 minutes when he showed some blistering speed close to the line.

Both sides again swapped tries, interchange forward Ryan James giving his side a 20-10 advantage before Cowboys hooker James Segeyaro scored a try just before the break to a four-point difference at halftime.

But it was all the Titans during the second stanza with Walker, Creighton, captain Ben Ridge and Rankin all scoring tries to run away with the result.

Knights stop Vodafone Junior Warriors

Newcastle held out a fast-finishing Vodafone Junior Warriors side for a 22-16 win in today’s fifth-round NYC match at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The Knights were 20-6 up after scoring two tries early in the second half facing a Vodafone Junior Warriors side without centre Rusty Bristow, forced off the field injured just before halftime.

But despite being down on manpower, the Tony Iro-coached side climbed back into contention when fullback Peter Mills scored in the 52nd minute to close to 12-20.

And after a penalty had edged Newcastle out to a 22-12 advantage, the Vodafone Junior Warriors stitched together a try for centre Siuatonga Likliliki – his fourth in five matches this season – to give themselves real hope of taking something out of the game.

Trailing 16-22 they were twice just thwarted as they attacked Newcastle’s right-hand corner enabling the Knights to seal just their second win of the season.

BULLDOGS NYC DEFEAT SOUTHS 54-18

The Bulldogs Toyota Cup side have made it two wins on the trot after 54-18 demolition of Souths at ANZ Stadium on Monday.

With Ben Barba at the helm, the young Dogs were a constant threat in attack while managing to minimise the unforced errors that have plagued their season thus far.

“We’ve always lacked a bit of structure going forward but having Barba out there allowed us to play a bit more as a confident team,” said Toyota Cup coach Andy Patmore.

Opposing second rowers Pakisonasi Afu and Kane Morgan traded tries in the first half, leaving the score at 10-10, before the Bulldogs found their feet in the wet conditions.

When bruising Jamal Idris combined with fleet-footed fullback Neenan Simpson and wing Kele Nuisere, the Bulldogs were able to put on another three tries down the right hand flank in the first forty.

Barba’s accuracy with the boot assured the Bulldogs went into halftime with a 28-10 lead.

The points flowed as steadily as the rain over ANZ Stadium in the second half as the Bulldogs ran amuck amongst a ragged Souths defence.

As the Rabbitohs continually slipped off tackles, the Dogs found the line on another five occasions.

Barba managed a try of his own in the 60th minute to take his personal tally to 18 points for the match.

The Toyota Cup Dogs now look ahead to a clash with the Eels at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday.

Coach Patmore is confident, believing his team has found the key to success in the NYC competition.

“We’ve shown if we match our opposition physically and do everything with aggression, then the results will come.”
