Young Broncos Prevail At Penrith

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have held on for their first win of the National Youth Competition season.

The young Broncos gave their coach Anthony Griffin several heart attacks in the last 10 minutes before prevailing 34-30 at CUA Stadium.

A last-minute tackle from Kurt Baptiste (pictured) that shoved a Penrith player into touch with 20 seconds left decided the victory.

Five minutes into the second half prop Josh Coyle put the Broncos 28-12 ahead when he barrelled over on an inside ball from hooker Kurt Baptiste.

On the next set of six the Broncos had the game in their grasp after Tariq Sims made a long break.

That allowed the Penrith defensive line to be exposed and Jacob Samoa ran into a big hole to score, Dane Gagai’s conversion putting it out to 34-12.

But the Panthers would hit back, five-eighth Stirling Siejka cleaning up a spilled bomb to score and make it 34-18.

The Panthers were making a run at the match when centre Michael Fulalo went over with 17 minutes left to leave the Broncos ahead by just 10 points.

And then it was game on with 11 minutes left when Penrith second rower Jesse Sene-Lefeo dived over, Seijka’s goal cutting the Broncos lead down to 34-30.

The Broncos went agonisingly close to wrapping it up twice in the final five minutes, Rhys Matsen held up over the line and then Todd Murphy unable to find an unmarked Komisi Umu on the next set.

Will Tupou was an early casualty, going off with what looked like a dislocated shoulder after just three minutes.

The Broncos scored just seven minutes into the game when Tyson Brookes went over in the corner.

Gagai could not kick the goal and the visitors led 4-0.

Three minutes later Gagai atoned for that miss when he scored a try of his own.

He chased a Corey Norman grubber and beat the Penrith players to the ball, his goal from next to the posts making it 10-0 after 10 minutes.

The Broncos went close again when winger Komisi Umu made a break down the right-hand wing, but the Panthers’ defence held.

The Panthers had a try disallowed for a double movement in the 17th minute.

Gagai then danced over for a brilliant try, his stepping feet beating four Penrith defenders.

He once again converted from in front of the posts and it was 16-0 ain the 25th minute.

Broncos powerhouse Dunamis Lui then sent his side further ahead, running a strong line off Todd Murphy to crash over.

Gagai banged over the two points and it was 22-0 10 minutes before the break.

But Penrith winger Zoram Watene gave his side some joy at last when he broke through from halfway and beat the fullback to score in the 34th minute.

Siejka converted and it was 22—6.

The Panthers were in again just before halftime when Tinia Arona scored, the goal bringing it to 22-12 at halftime.

NYC Titans thump Raiders

he Jetstar Gold Coast Titans’ NYC side has continued its brilliant start to the season with an emphatic 40-10 victory over fellow Toyota Cup heavyweights Canberra at Skilled Park tonight.

Titans forwards Kurt Foggo and youngster Ryan James both crossed for doubles as the Gold Coast made it five wins from six starts to remain in second spot on the ladder.

The Titans led 4-nil at halftime but poured on the points in the second half through tries to Foggo, James (2), halfback Cody Walker, centre Jamie Dowling and prop Soisaia Vave.

The only down side for the Titans was an ankle injury to speedy fullback Jy Hitchcox.

FIVE FOR VICKERY AS NYC THRASH KNIGHTS

The Toyota Cup side have defeated the Knights 44-6 this afternoon at WIN Jubilee Oval with winger Joe Vickery crossing for five tries.

The Dragons young guns started the match well and had a try called back for a forward pass from Beau Henry to centre Kane Linnett but the red and whites were able to score their first try through winger Joe Vickery. The grubber through came from his Captain Jake Marketo and with him and his opposite getting in a tangle Vickery showed good speed to score. Henry had the kicking duties and was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt and the Dragons were in front 4-nil after 14 minutes.

Ten minutes later the Dragons went on a scoring spree scoring three tries in five minutes. The first through Vickery who went over from a good cut-out ball from Henry in the south-eastern corner. Henry was unable to convert from out wide with the score staying at 8-nil.

The Dragons third try came through front rower Trent Merrin. They earned a repeat set after a grubber was put through and the Knights failed to get back into the field of play. With the Knights reeling in defence the Dragons just played simply down the middle of the park and Merrin took the ball one off the ruck and strolled over to score under the uprights. Henry converted with the lead extended out to 14-nil.

After being involved in the opening try Marketo was able to get one of his own in the 29th minute. It was a great piece of individual play with the Captain stepping off his left foot and totally fooling his opposite in defence and he took off and showed too much strength for the fullback to score 10m in from the eastern touchline. Henry couldn’t convert with the score staying at 18-nil.

The final 10 minutes saw the Dragons get a little complacent with a few mistakes coming into their game. With that happening the Knights got a roll on and were able to go over for their opening try of the match. It was a mid-field bomb that had the Dragons fooled with no one wanting to take the ball and with the Knights getting a boot to the ball halfback Kevin Pease won the race to the ball and scored. Their Captain Peter Mata’utia converted and the Dragons went to the break leading 18-6.

The Dragons continued to dominate coming out in the second half and going over to score their fifth try of the afternoon and third for Joe Vickery. It was just a standard set down field and with a Henry bomb coming at the end of it Knights fullback John Ford couldn’t handle the ball and Vickery pounced to score. Cameron King took over the kicking duties and converted to extend the lead out to 24-6.

Things didn’t change with Vickery going over for his fourth try six minutes later after he picked up the scraps up from a Knights mistake and ran 40m untouched to score. King couldn’t convert with the score now 28-6 after 48 minutes.

The match didn’t change its momentum with the Dragons sticking with it right through until the final whistle with centre Dean Whare going over to score, Joe Vickery scoring his fifth for the afternoon and Mitch Rein grabbing one right at the death.

In a promising sign the young Dragons didn’t let up and convincingly defeated the Knights 44-6.

BULLDOGS TOYOTA CUP SNATCH WIN

The Bulldogs Toyota Cup outfit have snatched a dramatic 30-28 comeback victory over the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

Boom centre Jamaal Idris scored under the posts with two minutes remaining to level the scores. Halfback Ben Barba, who finished with a personal points haul of 14, calmly slotted the conversion to secure the Dogs’ third win on the trot.

“We weren’t prepared as we should have been, we weren’t earning the right to play football, but the effort from the boys was fantastic and we got away with it,” said Toyota Cup coach Andy Patmore.

In a see-sawing contest the Bulldogs found themselves down by 14 points early in the second half.

Yet they mustered a comeback under the direction of Barba, who led the attack with distinction for the second week running.

Earlier Barba had scooped up a loose ball to spark a scintillating end-to-end try for the Dogs in the 16th minute.

However a first-half double to Eels centre Brad Graham ensured the Dogs went into halftime trailing 12-16.

Parramatta took the ascendency with two tries in the aftermath of the break. The Bulldogs only had themselves to blame as unforced errors and needless penalties began to creep into their game.

“Poor decisions took over – I don’t know why. We were just playing immature football,” said coach Patmore.

However hopes of a comeback rose when second row Pakisonasi Afu crossed for his second try in the 56th minute.

His bullocking charge to score inspired the Dogs, who clearly lifted their intensity in the final 20 minutes.

Barba dived on a grubber to narrow the gap and before fullback Neenan Simpson unleashed Idris to score the match-winner.

Coach Patmore reserved specific praise for prop Ben James, who had real impact coming off the bench for the Dogs.

Young Roosters downed in NZ

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side have been defeated across the ditch 22-14 by the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday.

The under 20 Roosters outfit were looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a Warriors side coming off two consecutive losses at home.

After leading by eight the Roosters shot themselves in the foot with handling errors leaking 22 second half points.

The Roosters and Warriors traded blows early with both having their chances to post first points foiled by errors.

The Roosters came up with the first try courtesy of a Tom Symonds flat ball putting Dylan Sharp over in the 11th minute. The chance was setup when the Warriors spilt the ball coming out of their own red zone. Tufuga Sa’s conversion attempt was waved away.

Some dogged goal line defence denied the Warriors on three consecutive occasions with the Roosters making 22 tackles inside their own 20 minutes during the first quarter of the match.

Home side received a penalty 30 metres out from the Roosters line and were hungry to get a try of their own but stubborn defence prevented yet another raid.

Isaac Maliota scored the Tricolours second try three minutes from the break after a rehearsed play close to the line allowed the prop to muscle over. Sa’s conversion attempt from the same blade of grass was hooked across the face of goal.

After the break the Roosters attacked down the Warriors right hand side of defence only to have Grant Nelson’s final pass intercepted and travel 95 meters under the arm of Bill Tupou. Shaun Johnson converted his only attempt to reduce the deficit to two.

The Roosters hit back immediately through Sandor Earl in the 49th minute. Matt Hands took on the line before dumping a pass over a defender for his unmarked winger in the corner. Sa was successful with his conversion attempt from the sideline for a handy 8 point lead.

The home side forced two errors deep inside the Roosters half leaving and Rusty Bristow and Tupou to make the visitors pay. Johnson converted one of the two attempts leaving the home 16-14 in front.

The Roosters steely defence was a distant memory as the Warriors fourth try of the half to Kurt Kara extended their lead to a converted try lead. Johnson then converted for an eight point lead putting all the pressure on the visitors.
