Young Broncos Hold Firm Over Eels

A determined Brisbane Broncos under-20s team have muscled up and outclassed the Parramatta Eels in the Toyota Cup Competition at Suncorp Stadium this evening.

The Broncos lost their first five games of the 2009 season, but tonight’s 18-16 victory was their second on the trot.

The Eels looked the stronger of the two sides early in the second half as a slick pass by the Eels halfback Daniel Mortimer allowed for lock Jason Baitieri to hit and spin his way over the try line.

The successful conversion by Mortimer took the Eels to a 16-6 lead 50 minutes in to the match.

The Broncos were unlucky as massive prop David Hala was held up over the try line.

In the same set a clever dart from dummy half led to the Broncos hitting back through hooker Kurt Baptiste.

The successful conversion by from Hunt took the score to 16-12 with 28 minutes remaining.

A handling error by Josh Coyle gave the Eels a chance to extend their lead with 22 minutes remaining in the match, however they failed to capitalise.

Fatigue set in as both sides were plagued by handling errors.

Jharal Yow Yeh almost sniffed out a try but the ball narrowly beat him to the dead ball line.

A silly penalty given away by Eels centre Brad Graham gave the Broncos a chance to grab the lead.

The Broncos capitalised as halfback Ben Hunt threw a screamer of a pass for a flying Todd Murphy to put his side ahead 18-16 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Broncos remained strong with repeat sets as big second rower Kurtis Lingwoodock was denied the chance to steal the win as he was held up over the try line.

It was an arm wrestle early in the match as the Broncos failed to capitalise off a beautiful one on one strip by five-eighth Corey Norman.

The slippery Eels looked dangerous with some ducking and weaving in attack leading to an easy gain of field position.

The Broncos stayed strong in defence and were unlucky not to score after a line break and brilliant dummy from Hunt.

A lack of cohesion hurt the Broncos as the Eels capitalised on repeat sets with winger Domenic Nasso barging his way over in the corner giving his side the 4-0 lead 20 minutes in to the match.

The Eels were gifted a penalty 10 metres out from the try line but big Kene Te Whata dropped the ball cold.

The Broncos capitalised as Norman threw a perfectly timed pass to a flying Yow Yeh who scored under the posts putting the Broncos ahead 6-4 with eight minutes remaining in the half.

The Broncos maintained pressure until half-time but they were unable to score points.

Some inexperience showed as the young Broncos switched off in the final minute allowing for the barnstorming five-eighth TK Amosa to cross putting his side ahead 10-6 at half-time.

TOYOTA CUP MAKE IT FIVE STRAIGHT

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have registered their fifth consecutive victory today defeating the Roosters 12-8 at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The match was in the balance until a Mitch Rein try with just four minutes remaining sealed the victory.

The opening stages of the Toyota Cup match were quite scrappy but the opening points came in the 12th minute through try-scoring machine Joe Vickery. On the last tackle halfback Beau Henry chose to chip and chase for himself and after regathering he got the ball out to centre Kane Linnett who drew the winger and passed in on to Vickery who scored in the north-western corner. Henry beautifully converted from the sideline to put the Dragons in front 6-nil.

In the 21st minute the Roosters were able to register their first points of the afternoon through five-eighth Tom Symonds. A mistake from the Dragons on half-way and a break by Roosters prop Andrew Clayton put the Roosters in good field position. On the last tackle a cross-kick was put over into the south-eastern corner and after a bit of a mix-up Symonds ended up with the ball and dived over to score. Fullback Luke Towers was unable to convert from out wide with the Dragons remaining in front 6-4.

For the remainder of the first half both sides had their opportunities but could not turn it into points. Hooker Cameron King took a dart from dummy-half but was caught short which proved to be the Dragons best chance but neither side went over with the Dragons in front 6-4 as the teams went to the sheds.

The Dragons first opportunity for points in the second half came 17 minutes in with the red and whites getting a penalty on half-way that put them in good field position. Form there the Dragons worked a set but it came undone when back rower Brad Hudson reached out to score he lost control of the ball and handed possession back to the Roosters.

Six minutes later a 40/20 kick from Roosters halfback Matt Hands gave the Roosters a set in the Dragons “red zone” but again poor handling let them down and the Dragons came away with the ball two metres out from their own goal line.

After the Roosters looked certain to score after their hooker Olireti Samuela made a break through the centre of the field but again they lost control of the ball and after the Dragons got a penalty it was Dragons hooker Mitch Rein who made a break from 40m out and showed too much speed for the fullback and went over to score the match winner in the south-eastern corner. Henry again converted from out wide with the score out to 12-4 with just four minutes remaining.

The Roosters went over for a consolation try just two minutes later when halfback Matt Hands slipped through the defence and went over 10m in from the eastern touchline. Towers couldn’t convert and the Dragons held on in a scrappy match 12-8.

Big recovery not enough for Vodafone Junior Warriors

A withering four-try second half recovery wasn’t enough to carry the Vodafone Junior Warriors to their second comeback win in consecutive games when they faced Melbourne at Olympic Park today.

After going into halftime 14-28 down, the Vodafone Junior Warriors launched an assault that propelled them to a 32-28 lead with 18 minutes to go.

But the Melbourne Thunderbolts stormed home with another three tries of their own to win the 78-point contest 46-22.

Thomas Van, moved into the centres for injured Rusty Bristow, scored three of the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ seven tries while right winger Bill Tupou grabbed another to lift his career tally to 20 tries in 25 NYC matches. In challenging conditions, Shaun Johnson was able to convert only two tries.

For Melbourne, winger Matt Duffie, a product of St Kentigern College in Auckland, scored four tries in the opening 33 minutes of the game.

The win lifted Melbourne to second on the NYC points table which the Vodafone Junior Warriors dropped a place to eighth for now.

Matt Duffie, great wing prospect for the Storm and for the Kiwis. Very similar in physique to Pat Richards and has an enormous leap on him. Keep an eye out for him next year.

Great win for the Manly boys coming back from 18-10 down without their halves combination of Kieran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans. Scotty Blanch and Liam Higgins must have both had blinders in the second half. Blake Davey continues to score tries and Manly remain undefeated on top of the ladder! Great effort lads!

Heartbreaking finish for Toyota Cup

Despite leading for much of the round 7 Toyota Cup clash against Manly, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys lost 26-22 after a heartbreaking final 20 minutes.

In a sometimes fiery match, the Cowboys showed great tenacity in striking back against an early Manly try and by half time held a 16-10 lead.

Going to an 18-10 lead in the 52nd minute, the home side looked well on top but Manly were able to come back strongly, scoring two tries to one in the final 28 minutes.

When Obe Geia scored a spectacular try off a bomb in the 76th minute a dramatic finish seemed likely, but a disallowed Cowboys try in the 79th minute only contributed to the heartbreaking loss.

We almost screwed ourselves by starting three props. I don't see why that was going to work against the Roosters. And really if you wanted to go bigger, you'd go with Sam Campbell who played in the backrow last year.
