On Burton the coach had to make a choice between him and Luai. That is how I see it.
The question is who do you prefer? I do not know enough a out the two to determine who will have the better career.
I do know plenty of juniors are overated by their own fans. I still remember when Eels fans where convinced Bevan French was superior to Cam Munster when I was saying we should throw the book at Munster.
Luai was always ahead of him in the pecking order and did nothing to lose his position. His combination with Cleary over many years made him safe in the 6.

Cameron Smith will coach them in a few years
Nothing to say he'll be a good coach. Of the current 16 NRL coaches, how many were elite players? A few were decent to good players, Des perhaps a little better than that, and Sticky approached elite but some would say even he can't coach. Champion players do not often make champion coaches.

Same things were said after Bennett left the Broncos.. yet here we are

Broncos didn’t have the best spine in the comp. Amazes me how you’re glossing over that.

Melbourne built their success around the spine, they’ve really never had many super stars in other positions. It’s all about the spine, and that will be continuing.

I wonder how many great players have ever really pursued coaching, though? Brett Kenny did, he wasn’t good. Fittler another. But I can’t think of many. (Thinking just club level)

Mal, Bozo (had success but always had brilliant cattle), can't think of too many others.

I am not glossing over that but no Smith. Hughes likely goes is a different story. Their strength is giving the cheap guys like Brenko Lee etc to perform higher. All that goes into what you see

You say that like we’ve got some masterful coach & CEO.

Brian Fletcher knows nothing about footy, and Cleary is a middle of the road coach. Storm won’t have a problem in those departments, they’ve got very smart ownership. That’s the key difference.
I think the crucial word is ownership who owns Penrith NRL no one really, none of the directors has skin in the game
A fella named Gus Gould did ok...
Raper wasn’t a success but Harry Bath and Clive Churchill won premierships. Norm Provan was a reasonably successful full time coach after his time as a very successful Captain Coach

This is false.
Look at this year's side. 2 of the best wingers in comp. Two of the better props. An origin lock and 2nd rower.
And an international hooker/lock in B.Smith coming off the bench.

Quite often it is the bog average players that make the best coaches. Trent Robinson and Craig Bellamy hardly had decent NRL careers.
