It’s interesting seeing people trying to rationalise the possibility of losing Leniu, if they don’t re-sign him the off season has been a failure. There’s no way to spin it.

I judge an off season by the team's performances in the following year. To me the building blocks for the up comming season are created in the off season.
The re-signing of contracts is only a small part.of the off season.

Sure I agree it would great if Lenui re-signs, it he doesn't it isn't the end of the world. Lots of good kids just hanging out for a start.

The people complaining now would be the some ones complaining next year when we are struggling to keep fish and kikau which is what will happen if we give Burton and leniu ridiculous money.

So very well said.

The salary cap pressure is not going to 'magically' disappear. Teams with lots of local juniors like ours it's an on going struggle.

Bullshit. If they match any offer they are stupid not smart. That a ridiculous way of looking at it.

Who said match? You don’t have to match an offer to retain someone. Players often stick around for less money.

If you had to match every offer to retain your players, something would be very wrong.

I’m talking specifically about off season signings, and losing Leniu, Burton, Tamou, Laurie and the disaster of Naden makes for a poor off season. Not to mention whatever the hell is going on with Crichton, whose had an offer for months but won’t put pen to paper.

You won’t replace Leniu with the same quality for the same price, bringing people in from other clubs always costs more.

Lets lose $600k as Leinu's price. We got Capewell and Tetevano for that.

It isn't so much getting the same talent with these cases. It is keeping more of what we have.

I will gladly lose Leinu if it means keeping Fish, Api and Kikau

We get $500k back from parra when those guys are off contract. I’m not suggesting we give ridiculous money, but the off season still hasn’t gone well if we lose Leniu.

Where are you pulling 600k from? Anyone can just make up a figure to prove their point.

as a development club there is going to be a turnover from the top to be filled by the bottom younger cheaper and oft (very) talented kids looking for an opportunity.

Mansour and Staines is a great example of this dynamic.

The problem is you don’t typically win comps by getting younger. We need to be careful about the idea we can just fall back on youth.

Agreed. Some will walk e.g. Burton. However we already have two great starting halves. Having a guy like Burton is reserves is incredible but there isn't a club in the NRL that has that kind of depth. And nor should they. There are only 32 starting positions in the NRL for halves.

Also agree on $$$. We aren't the Storm or the Roosters but we just made the grand final. We should be able to sign players on cheaper deals because we are a realistic chance of taking out a competition. The Dogs and Tigers have to pay overs but I don't think we do right now.

Losing Leniu after releasing Tamou and Hetherington is 100% a failure. Unless we have a gun replacement. Most of the time Gus would have had that sorted though not so sure these days.

Who in the pack would you be prepared to lose for Leinu? Virtually everyone in the squad had their value go up.

Some will stay for less and some won’t, we’ve had guys stay for less. We’ve got a team full of stars and you’re saying Leniu is must keep at any cost I find that really silly, “you can’t keep them all” isn’t just some cliche, you literally cannot keep them all due to a salary cap, I honestly don’t think some actually give consideration to that everyone’s heard it and said it but do you really get it? Forgive me for being condescending but blanket statements like you made make me wonder. Whether we are matching the offer or not we should have a price that we can pay for leniu and we should not go over it by much at all. Blowing out our cap over a twenty year old in the position we are in now we be the worst thing we could do. That’s an emotional reaction it’s not logical at all.

When you look through the side. Some guys realistically could of doubled their deals. Not be on huge money now

Staines was Development player
Martin would of been on $200k at most as a rookie
To'o close to minimum. $300k now or so
Crichton was minimum
Luai was probably $300k or so. Easily doubles it
Part of Api was paid by Manly. Rumoured to be $150k
Yeo should get $50-$100k more.
Can expect similar for JFH and Kiks

Keeping a young team together is very difficult

Yep there heaps of players who need more money. Look at the storm who are comfortably in the top two run clubs in the Comp. Tino and the cheese are two of the best young players on the comp, why haven’t they just extended them early and kept them? They were both playing in the starting 17 and yet they will lose them both in the 12 months along with fox and Suni. That’s four of the top 17 from the gf gone by 2022 and there are possibly more going.

Well none of them ideally. But obviously that won't happen at some point:

JFH
Yeo
Tetevano
Leota
Leinu

I'm backing Leota to have a big year as well as Leinu if he sticks around. So the odd guy out is Tetevano. But all 5 of those must stay for 2021 unless you line up a replacement. We have gone from 7 first grade middles down to 5 and I doubt we will be as lucky with injuries as we were in 2020. 2022 is a different story as so much can change.

Cam Smith gone
Jerome Hughes likely too

It happens across the board. Keep key players rotate the rest in and out of the squad
