I was thinking this morning what our 2014 team would look like.
2014:
1. Moylan, 2. Watene/Satini/G.Jennings/Mackay, 3. Jennings, 4. Whare, 5. Roberts, 6. Coote, 7.???, 8. O'Donnell, 9. Segeyaro, 10. Grant, 11. Manu, 12. Robinson, 13. Austin
14. McKendry, 15. Pangai, 16. Brown, 17. V.Tia-Kilifi
With Manu able to shift up to prop at a pinch. I go with this for a few reasons. You may ask where Mansour, Weston, Kingston, Plum, N.Smith are? My answer...not here. Along with Ciraldo, Galea, Newton, Simmons, Armit. That's 10 guys going...and who'll replace them? Our young guys who are being groomed this year and next to take over. This is the plan that is being put in place.
You may ask why Mansour isn't here? Well, you saw this year that Gould has no desire to get into a bidding war for wingers...and with a plethora of young guys capable of filling the void...I don't see him overpaying if another team gets involved. Similar story with Weston. His dropping at certain stages this year signal that if a better option is available he isn't going to overpay and with young guys like Hollis etc likely to put there hand up at some stage of 2014 I don't see them re-signing Weston. As for Kingston...I doubt Segeyaro came here to ride the pine...he'll be our fulltime hooker with Blake South/Ryan Simpkins as back up.
The ?? at half...well you could figure out who I think that'll be.
You may think we lack size off the bench...and you MAY be right...but we certainly don't lack impact. O'Donnell will be in a position to be this years Weston and an aggressive starter with McKendry used where he should be...off the bench with freedom. Throw into the mix a bulked up/ripped Pangai (think T-Rex build), VTK with some additional size and Brown off the bench as a backrow/hooker and there is substantial size there even without a specialist 2nd prop.
We may even see 6.Seijka with Coote shown the door after next year as well. Overall I dig that 2014 team even without many additions...using the guys we'll be developing in 2013.
