I would've let Martin go...second rowers are a dime a dozen these days especially handy ones.

Glad Critter is going as he Is just a centre that can be replaced at some stage by someone capable. Hooker on the other hand was a must keep position same with Edwards at fullback mainly becuase we use our back 3 the most in the leauge.

Now that Martin has been kept I think the next move honestly would be to let Luai go and use the free money to attract a gun hooker. Alot of hookers would love to play in the panthers setup so I'm sure they'd do what Wighton has done and take 300k less to come here 😁

Martin and Leota for me. Having an elite spine is more important to me then a stacked forward pack.

No Leota means we likely kept Spencer too so the outcome evens out.

Not sure there are many gun hookers available, We need to get a younger one and develop

Agree with the above. We clearly had cash to up the Api offer but chose to stand our ground and then dump it into Leota & Martin. Incredible players but definitely more replaceable. Hopefully the club proves to have made the right bet but its easy to be skeptical at the moment.

Egan is the logical guy who we could talk to come November 1 or whatever the date is now. I wouldn't hate Lachlan Croker either on more moderate money. He's been suprisingly solid at hooker the last 2-3 years and could be a bit of an upgrade on Kenny in a tandem with Luke if the club doesn't see gold in Sommerton/Mason/Smith.

This isn't a salary cap issue.
Yes it is, its just blatent, to buy a marquee player like wighton, its not like souffs went up to momo and offered him unders, they offered Canberra's star player, to play in the centres... it just wreaks of under the table dodgyness... fair enough if he went there on 1mil, but he is going for well unders... it just shows how lop sided the comp is in regards to the player market... where the more successful clubs can pick the eyes off the struggling ones, it reminds me of tedesco and fittler going to the roosters, but worse coz they aren't paying what other clubs like the raiders or the dolphins were offering.. its a wonder that the titans, knights and raiders are able to sign anyone of value without paying overs

Souffs have Kolomantangi and Campbell Graham off contract next year. Not sure how to re-sign both with Wighton there.

That is the flow on from making these recruitment decisions. They will lose 1 or 2 future stars to get Latrell and Cody's mate across

Experienced half leave fill with rookie, bring in expensive player and move on player from that position. We could do that right now if the club wanted. You think Illias and Reynolds are on the same coin? They'll also lose at least 1 outside back with Wighton playing centre. It's not that deep.

If it costs them Campbell Graham then it is a bad signing. If it guts their pack then it is bad. It takes a few seasons to get the fallout and assess these things

They'll lose players for sure. The advantage is Wighton's age. Illias won't get big half money until Jack has either declined or retired.

Wighton is over thirty and is an outside back who relied on physical dominance to make a go of the halves. His half play has always been terrible, good for a no pressure kick out on the full or as we saw last week a brain dead intercept to almost lose a guaranteed win.

The current other members of the spine at Canberra is Fogerty, Savage and Woolford/Starling. Fogerty is mediocre and the others barely first grade standard.

Jack has likely made millions in his decade long career to date and if he invested as he came into grade would be sitting on a decent pile of unrealised gains.

There's a good chance he looked at the extra net $100k (remember tax) per year and decided that being the key play maker in a nuffy team wasn't worth as much to him as potential to reach career goals with the little time he has left.

Different to Critter and Spencer who don't have their bags yet and have won two comps.

A player now only needs one big four year contract to set themselves up. It's then up to them if they keep accumulating at max earning potential or try to fill a trophy cabinet.

Simple Jack isn't some star. He's a very mediocre player imo

He is (was?) an awesome ball runner.

At his peak during the pre six again Melbourne/Cronulla negative tactics era he was amazing inside the twenty at making something happen with strength and footwork against teams deliberately giving away on the line penalties.

Souths can backend their deals as they'll get a cap exemption on the payout halfway through on medical retirement ala Burgess and GI.

Over thirty Simple Jack and Cody Walker are prime candidates to not play out the full length of their deals.
