Maybe the club see him as the next Hosking or Keeley? Though it’s always a concern when your two wingers have 10kg on a guy they’ll likely need to play in the middle at stages this season.

Will be fascinating how coaches use the bench this year.

I think at the start of the season we’ll see teams running out with 1-17 per normal and the 18-19 being a specialist half and back who only get minutes on the field as a Plan C when there’s unexpected injuries.

Later in the year some coaches will get a bit more adventurous and we’ll see the bench used more like how it is in soccer- players are either brought into the match to create tries when behind, or shore up the defence when in front.

And players 1-7 might be 100% fit, but they’re no longer certainties to be on the field for 80 minutes and can be interchanged if needed.

Imagine those games last year where everything went wrong for Schiller or Marzhew, but we were forced to keep them on the field. Having a player like Hunt being able to come on as a straight swap and not needing to rearrange half the back line would be invaluable.

Would hate to see someone like Matt Arthur be on the bench and barely play and never get to play for reserves etc. Hopefully Holbrook manages it well.

It is a really great initiative by the NRL this six man bench. As has already been said, one injury should no longer change an entire game so acutely if the coach gets the balance right.
Additionally a player not aiming up in the backs should feel a bit of pressure in game rather than after the result, knowing a back who can cover them can see them get hooked.

Yeah just saw this and came on here to post the same thing… Jeez we need a forward leader so badly and he’d be just about the perfect guy to fit that role. From what I understand he didn’t leave Newcastle on bad terms or anything, so perhaps there’s a possibility?

At the very least I’d hope that his phone is blowing up today with calls from POS, Holbrook, KP and a few other Knights players who he’s played with before asking him to come back..

The queue will be long. How good would it be though! In alternate universe Tapine and Barney are our props. With his new found maturity and work ethic, Barney would be invaluable to Mooney and Hopwood. By the time he retires both if them will be ready to take it to the next level.
