They have been for a while. That said, the pack was attrocious most of the year - especially the 2 on the big dollars.

The coach has a big question mark against him.

Even when they put wins together it was against the teams going like busteds.

Their season was close to a disaster considering the wraps they had on them.

I just can't get excited about them.

Something not right at that club.

Absolutely - when the local boy, captain, best player... is forced out - you know the joint is rotten.

All well and good to say it needs to be "Cleary's team" - but a good culture means that isn't even a consideration.

No one is saying Smith has to leave so it can be "Munster's team"....

I'm 99% certain another centre of some sort will be added to the squad before round 1 next year.
If we can't jag Morris is there anyone even worth chasing?
The fact we went after someone as horrific as Beale means stocks must be very low.

I personally wouldn't mind if we could land Josh Morris for a season or 2...I've always rated him as a quality back who's versatile and always dependable, both in attack and defence and goes about his work with a minimum of fuss - different in a lot of ways but reminds me of McManus for solid dependability.

I also think he'd be a good influence on some of the younger backs in learning their craft

Our best hope is to get a centre that is forced out by salary cap such as Morris, stocks are low.
We can play Sione centre or SKD with Moga, Sio and Ross on the wings but not much depth.

I'd be happy with one more good quality prop and a few experimental/depth players in the centre position.
The more I think about it, the more sione to centre makes sense. I think his future is in the backrow but he's still only 21. To put things in perspective Luke Lewis didn't make the switch until he was 25

From the Daily Telegraph

KNIGHTS WANT LODGE

MATT Lodge seems destined to resurrect his NRL career with Newcastle joining the race to sign the trouble-plagued prop.

Brisbane looked almost certain to sign Lodge, but the Knights have made a late pitch to take on the former Wests Tigers player.

Lodge, who has not played in the NRL since the last of his 12 games in 2015, was among the best performers for Brisbane’s Intrust Super Cup feeder club Redcliffe and was nominated for the competitions player of the year award.

It is understood the NRL would not stand in Lodge’s way if a club wanted to sign him next year and beyond.

An NRL spokesman said Lodge was a not a current contracted player however the NRL would consider his registration if a club wanted to sign him.

The NRL noted that Lodge has been out of the game for the past two years and has made efforts to rehabilitate in that time.

The Knights are searching for a prop after missing out of Warriors bound Adam Blair. The Broncos also have an opening following Blair’s departure.

In March, Lodge was ordered to pay $1.6 million to US victims following his much-publicised rampage in New York two years ago. Lodge threatened to quit the game in July.

Newcastle are also in discussions to sign Cronulla veteran Chris Heighington.

I could probably cope with Sione at centre if we had no other choice. Having to do less defence is probably not a bad thing for him considering how he's always taking head-knocks and also given his defence can be pretty suspect.

That being said I still think that's plan B and that we should be aiming to get a specialist centre with a bit of experience.

Being a Dolphins fan meant i got the chance to watch Lodge a fair bit this season and I have to say I was impressed. Easily the best prop going around in QCUP

He really seems to have his head straight too which is good given his recent past. I'd be happy giving him a low ball contract

I’d be happy to back Brown and Mooney’s judgement around Lodge’s character. No doubting his ability.

One f**k up and he’s gone though.

You are letting other factors sway your judgement, does Bennett really want him or is he on selling, do we need him, what are the benefits considering we are stocked very bloody well in his position.
Realistically no thanks we are ok

Bennett has huge wraps on him and rates him highly. From all reports he was the standout prop in the ISC. Not my opinion just what I've read. There's no secret that Bennett wants him and now needs him badly. He believes he is a future rep prop at tye highest level. As far as I can see we have 5 props for 2018. Is that right? Safiti x 2, Ese, Lillyman and King. Who have I missed? ( not including Amey).

I'd like at least another prop - maybe 2.

In an interview today brown said that our recruitment is still not over and with a little bit of luck wants to sign someone for our backline.

He also pretty much confirmed that Watson will play 5/8, Brock lamb will play half, ponga will play fullback and griffin will work in combination with Levi.

He said that this pre season will be a step up from the last and the expectation on our players will be much higher this pre season.
