Rumours and Stuff

Your post has just made me realise that my 2 young blokes (nearly 12 and 10), have no real interest in rugby league. They play soccer, and while I watch between 3 and 4 games of NRL each weekend, and obviously cheer and curse at the TV like a mad merkin whenever the Eels are playing, they rarely watch it with me, and only show a slight passing interest... when I was their age I lived and breathed rugby league and so did my mates. And when I think about my mates kids, similar ages to my own kids, none of them have any real interest in league either, certainly no passion for it like we had/have.... wonder what ratings and match attendances will be like 20 years from now....
I think that to a certain extent be across the board for all sports. Kids these days have too many other things they can do and choose to do over playing in the backyard. Many of them are glued to devices these days.
I have taken my 7 year old son to the footy since he was about 2 and up until a year ago he just sat there playing on his game console all game. He now watches more and more games with me and leaves the gaming device at home. I think that coincides with the understanding of the game getting better.
In saying that he has played league for the past 3 years so that may be the only reason the interest is there

I've said it before, with the trajectory that the NRL is on, in around 20 years, RL will be a shadow of its former self as far as popularity goes. The AFL will at least doubled its overall popularity in the Sydney market and be winning all the ratings and attendance figures by any markers.

League has been losing its luster/appeal for around a decade now and all the missteps come from the head office. Death by a thousand cuts. I've said on here before, this year I'm struggling to watch more the just Parra games. I just don't anymore. I watch bits and pieces at most. But my interest wains fairly quickly and I usually switch over to something else. Small unappealing crowds. Games with no atmosphere. If the game starts slow, I'm out of there. Next.

My loyalty is gone. Geez I wish AFL was a decent sport, I would of been a Swannie ages ago, like a lot of my friends and family. I'm probably the only one of my friends or family that hasn't at least a passing interest in the AFL. That in itself is a telling indicator in where things are heading, because most of the people I grew up with knew nothing about AFL growing up and most of them were RL tragics like me. Well not anymore.

The times are a changing. It won't be that detectable for a while yet, but a decade or so from now it will be undeniable. The AFL have won the war. The nail in the coffin will be when the clubs rejig the NRL constitution and have all the power and life support in perpetuity. With their power they will appoint a puppet/stooge to run the show and the rest as they say is skata.

WTF?

Yeah NRL has its issues that need fixing, but the f**k the actual league product / games is still pretty bloody good!!!

AFL is boring as f**k!'

And seriously how the f**k does small crowds and no atmosphere have any effect on watching league on TV ? Slow starting games ?

We are all different people with different experiences but I cannot disagree more. I don't know a single person who can stand , let alone, have a passing interest / watch AFL. Plenty of Jnr footy / Soccer parents I know have attempted or know someone who has attempted having their kids play and couldn't move on quicker.

Stats and projected figures mean what you wish for them to mean, I wont ever have an interest in that backward game and I can guarantee I am not alone.

With regards to NRL, everyone has there detractors, you certainly hear any problem from league from germo's with an axe to grind/clicks to sell. We read these papers because they are discussing the game we follow. Nonsense over the over statements like "will be gone in 20 years" is dribble. Christ, union is still going.

On topic, I can't see anyone having the stones to cut teams, make them merge, we would lose audience and the greater good isn't enough to overcome this basic point. If there were to be changes to the competition it would be through a creation of a new comp or organic merger of teams that eventually run their course. This may be through objectives that the NRL place on clubs in future or clubs being mismanaged and not bailed out.

That said I would not walk away from league if Parra were to merge with Penrith. I am happy we stand alone and that we are able to, but if we were struggling I vaguely support Penrith because I have always lived and played in the area. I would always identify as a Parra supporter too, even if it was the Parra Panthers for example.

You raise some valid points, however homophobic slurs are really unnecessary. Time to leave the cave, man.

I just see it as moving away from a live experience to a video experience. Rugby league is hampered in this respect by being so good for TV. I feel I see less when I attend games.

Yes I agree, I have been calling it AFL for so long I just can't help myself, if just rolls of the tongue. But I genuinely don't mean to offend gay people. Love the f**kers.

When I did this last night I took into account the 2016 Census results.
I reckon each regional team needs at least 400,000+ residents to support a team and the only one that doesn't is the Central Coast. As a RL heartland, they will survive with lesser population regardless.

Each Sydney team needs at least 800,000 to 1,000,000+ residents so using the census figures for my break up above:
Western Sydney - 1.36M
Central Sydney - 0.87M (this includes inner west areas)
Southern Sydney & Illawarra -1.08M
Sydney North - 0.81M
Sth Western Sydney - 0.67M

Redefine the Western Sydney and Sth Western Sydney boundaries and give Sth Western Sydney another 200k residents and with the forecast growth in both areas they will both easily be the largest in 5-10 years.

Alternatively, keep Parramatta and Penrith separate and it looks like this:
Parramatta - 0.67M
Penrith - 0.64M
Sth West Syd - 0.67M

The interstate teams speak for themselves.
2 Brisbane teams means they share a 2.2M population so on par with the bigger Sydney teams.

Oh and something similar was sent to the ARL in 1997 before the Super League war but they ignored it then too. :)

They don't care MJC!

Their opinion is that fans are buck toothed morons who share a collective IQ point; ex players are allowed input; but they grovel to the media opinion.

I had a number of conversations with the scheduling guys over a number of years re the McIntyre top 8 system and how bad it was. I was fobbed off with the same story every time, and despite pointing out the inherent flaws in the arguments (and the system) they kept telling me it was the best one.

Shock horror, as soon as the media pans the system they change it.
