Off-contract Gutherson wants to become permanent No.1 at Eels

The running joke at Parramatta has always been the curse of Peter Sterling's No.7 jersey - but Jarryd Hayne's famous No.1 jersey is proving just as tough to fill.

Since Hayne departed the club the first time at the end of 2014, the Eels have churned through nine different fullbacks, including the Hayne Plane himself in his blue and gold second coming.

With all the uncertainty about the Eels halves - Corey Norman is understood to be thinking of taking a pay cut to join St George Illawarra and Mitchell Moses could be enticed to a move to Brisbane - Clint Gutherson hopes to quickly end any debate about who will be fullback.

Gutherson was coach Brad Arthur's Mr Fix-It last season after returning from injury in round seven, slotting into the halves, fullback and centre.

But Gutherson told the Herald his wish was settle on fullback and declared: "I'll put my best foot forward and try to make it my own."

Parramatta would be shattered to lose Gutherson, the 24-year-old with funky hair often in tears after some heavy losses in 2018.

The only thing that could deny Gutherson his wish to wear the No.1 is the lack of centre options, especially with their most established outside back, Michael Jennings, reportedly being shopped around.

"I've been training at fullback and trying to get the combinations going," Gutherson said. "I finished the season at five-eighth and centre. I like fullback, I like roaming around and popping up wherever I can. It doesn't bother me.

"I think I turn up in the right spot and feel like I've got that footy head where I can [sense] something coming.

"It can get hard at times when you're chopping and changing. It's good and bad for me, but I'd like to lock down a position and play the one spot. I'm happy to do what Brad wants and what's best for the team.

"'Bevy' [Bevan French] is there, there's a couple of the young boys, Will Smith can play there, but I'll put my best foot forward and try to make it my own.''

According to Champion Data, only Newcastle have tried more fullbacks (14) during the same period.

Parramatta sorely missed the big kick returns of winger Semi Radradra last season, but they were also worse off for not having an established and settled fullback.

Eels coach Arthur said last month he had no idea who would wear the No. 1 in round one. After Hayne's first exit at the end of 2014, the club experimented with Reece Robinson, Will Hopoate, Chris Sandow, Norman, French, Smith, Gutherson and of course Hayne on his return. Hayne had hoped to play there next year before talks broke down.

Gutherson remains without a deal beyond next season and says he nor the club are in a rush to nut out a deal.

"I don't know, I want to get to the season," said Gutherson, when asked about where he would be in 2020.

"The club isn't in a rush to push it either. We'll see what happens. I'm happy here. I've built up a good thing with the coaching staff and the players.

"I'll see what my options are, but at the moment I'm happy ripping into pre-season."

As for the immediate future of his halves, Gutherson quipped: "At the moment they're both there and we want them to be there. We've seen what they can do together and how they can play together. As a team we need to help them out and not leave it those two to do everything.

"If they're there at training that's all I worry about and all I can worry about."

Having a big body like Blake Ferguson could not be under-estimated, said Gutherson, just as the club never under-estimated the loss of Semi Radradra and his work early in the tackle count.

Gutherson hopes to continue to learn as a leader from Tim Mannah and the senior players, and would relish the chance if given the nod to help skipper the under-performing western Sydney club.

Parramatta players resigned to losing Norman to Dragons

Christian Nicolussi
11 December 2018 — 6:00pm

Parramatta players are privately resigned to losing Corey Norman from the club in the coming weeks.

And in a further blow to the Eels, Nathan Brown, their best and most consistent forward, underwent knee surgery on Friday night after he injured himself during a wrestling drill.

Norman appears to have played his final game for the club with a move to rivals St George Illawarra gathering momentum by the day.

Rather than launch a passionate defence of their larrikin playmaker teammate, Eels players said there was nothing they could do if that was what the board and coaching staff desired.

"It would be disappointing [if he left] but a lot of people are off contract, and that means there will be a lot of movement happening," said Brown, as the Eels completed their Christmas visit to Westmead Children's Hospital and Ronald Mcdonald House. "It's the way it is. It's no player's fault they're all off contract at the same time.

"It's a business and that's what happens in footy these days, especially lately when everything has been happening.

"Corey is a freakish talent, but if that's the way the Parramatta board and the coaches want to go, then that's it, we can't really control what happens with that stuff."

Manu Ma'u, who is another Eel off contract, said of Norman: "He would be a big loss, but it's up to Normy. He's skilful, he understands the game and he's a good person as well."

Ma'u then broke into a nervous laugh when pushed on Norman's reported move to the Dragons with a year to run on his deal.

Should Norman be moved on, it will create a five-eighth vacancy, with Jaeman Salmon just one option for coach Brad Arthur.

"He's been good, he's a tough competitor, he's only a young kid but he wants to win," Brown said of Salmon. "He had a couple of games last year and went alright. Nobody expected how he would have went but he went well."

Parramatta had started to make inquiries about moving on Norman towards the back half of the season, but were prepared at the time to only pick up around $150,000 of his $900,000 tab. Money seems to be the only thing stalling Norman's early exit now.

As for Brown, the lock forward injured his left knee a fortnight ago and realised he was in trouble when it did not improve.

"I had my lateral meniscus taken out," Brown said.

"I did it a couple of weeks ago at training, I was wrestling, it was sore, I didn't think anything of it, but a week later it was getting worse, I got a scan and away we went.

"I had a cleanout. It's about six to eight weeks [recovery]. I can start rehab running in a couple of weeks, and I should be back with the whole team in about six weeks."

Brown will be fit for the opening round against Penrith, but will no doubt be forced to play some catch-up with his fitness.

He welcomed the arrival of Junior Paulo whose big body and experience would boost the Eels forward pack.

FMD.........more dribble about the Eels, it never ends. This is a classic piece of dribble, though. One of many dribbles.

Maybe BA is taking the youth policy from here on. Yes there’s risks, but If it pays off, we may be stronger, long term.
And then when he gets his marching orders halfway though 2019 a new coach will come in and declare we need experience across the park and that young bloke's simply aren't up to it and a whole new recruitment drive and philosophy will kick in.... And so the endless cycle of disappointing season after disappointing season continues for Eels fans.... Sigh

BTW - not saying a youth policy is a bad thing, merely pointing out that I doubt he'll be around long enough to see if it bears any fruit....

As promising as some of these juniors are reality is other clubs have a heap they are banging on about too.
I highly doubt there will be 8 first graders from this lot. Its almost unheard of. We had 5 debut last season. High number. It seems like Brown,Sivo and Stefano are a high chance while the likes of Parry,Haze,Filiga,GL are all a chance.

The following year Id imagine Schneider and Stefano brother are a chance.

I think its good we are blooding guys. I just dont expect all of them to make it let alone be stars.

Norman's been here 5 years and hasn't lead us to a finals win. In fact i don't think he has won a final in his career from memory.

He has had plenty of opportunities it isn't the end of world if he goes.
