I don't think Jake is ready for First Grade, but he has talent - the try he set up in his debut, and his chip and chase try, show he has skill.

well one would think he’d have a bit of talent he’s probably being playing league his entire life. Does he have enough to make it as an nrl half? I don’t think so. Him scoring a try or two doesn’t mean he’ll have a long and lustrous career. Nor does it mean he’s guaranteed to be an immortal. He got picked by his dad to play, I don’t understand why he shouldn’t be scrutinized like any other player selected before him.

yeah argue whether JA should be in the top 17, but to suggest Drown is moved to centre to accommodate JA is entirely incorrect and supported by evidence….

Round 1, injured forced the move..
Round 2, no injuries, Drown remains in the halves, JA not used…..
The narrative from BA after our trials was that we had trained with Dylan in the centres and Jake at half. It certainly was talked about by the Coaching staff and that it was a deliberate plan rather than in response to injury

1. In my humble opinion Jake does not look ready for regular first grade and would benefit more from regular footy in Reggie’s
2. If he’s picked on the bench as utility cover for the backs … i can live with
3. If the deliberate plan is to move Dylan to accommodate Jake then that’s crazy and most would be questioning the coaches motive

So you also think he is not ready for first grade?? Which is the main argument from most on here. He has talent but he’s at least another Off season away from being close to first grade ready IMO.

So who should have subbed for Moses and Dylan when they were injured last year ?

As for round 1, the coach (in the absence of Marata) should have opted for a forward as cover for backs instead of Jake ?

I can't believe we are still having this argument. Who gives a f**k really. We won and collected 2 points.

agree. I may live with point 2 if JA actually trained in the utility role. But when he came on he was given a prominent role in the halves.

Off season? Not season in reserves?
Well yes this year and at least another off season. He’ll still be only 20 by then. He was rushed into first grade no doubt about it. Especially when you consider Bea’s history of softly softly approach with juniors.

Contract upgrade. Set the kid up for life.

Is he really? How have you determined that?
Well a big component is he already has. Capability is subjective somewhat, but seeing how he’s already played 1st grade and not like he was reenacting 1998 Paul Carige, seems reasonable that he’s capable. Do I think he’ll win Dally M, or even play more than a few dozen in his career? Probably not.
I also read the squad lists of all 16 teams and factoring in teams generally use about 25 players in 1st grade, I figure he’s inside the top 400 in the comp (excluding players in Super League, rugby, etc).

Do you honestly think BA would play his daughter if she didn’t prove capable?

Well he wasn’t completely rushed in. We had injuries and last year/this year he’s our 4th best half (after Moses, Drown and Daylight). BA had to be convinced by others to select him.
And I’m confused where the BA softly approach on juniors comes from. Drown chucked in hot seat, Mahoney chucked in hot seat, Penisini, Kaufusi, Stone.
The only BA juniors I can think of that he hasn’t given the time to that have gone on to prove him “wrong” are Matto, Stefano and stretch Twal & Keppie.

Drown was thrown in after Norman was punted, one of the halves had to go so he was the last man standing. Same as Mahoney he only got a run when we had no one else to pick from. Kaufusi and Salmon only got a run when we had both hands on the spoon.

Penisini finally got a run late last season he was almost the best player on the field and then dropped. I think since the spoon and the review that we are now a development club that he has started to give youth more a chance which I think has been good for the squad plus I think he has more young talent to choose from. But Jake was fast tracked there is no doubt about it, well before he was ready IMO.

Well I responded with I believe a far more reasoned answer but if you want to go with your own prejudices, go ahead.

circumstances got him some game time last season. Ready or not maybe there was no other genuine option. This season the coach thinks JA is good enough to get some game time. But to do so, he’s got to transition his starting 5/8 to centre to get JA onto the field. Never in my life have i heard of a half training in another position (where he’s never played) in the off season to allow a rookie onto the field. It’s not like BA has had brain farts in the past or anything, or had weird team selections or f^*ked up the bench rotation. The kid may one day be a talent, and some would eat humble pie. I just can’t see it happening.

You reckon if Drown isn’t available we punt Norman, or not use Norman’s cash to get a more established player? Mahoney and Penisini only got runs via injuries but once there BA decided they were the future.
Salmons had opportunity at 3 clubs and not established himself, so softly softly was probably more a case of not good enough
