Unless your suggestion is that we extend Gutherson beyond next year, then this was a problem that was inevitable and nigh anyway...in that case, I think this risk is more than acceptable.
No, I'm not suggesting that. All I'm saying is that letting him go one year early, given all the circumstances involved, is a huge risk.

We'll know in 6-9 months whether the risk was acceptable.

Love Mitch but I don't think he is underpaid - in fact, I would venture that a comparable replacement would probably cost less than Mitch as, by Isaac Moses economics, Mitch will always be paid at the top of his bracket.....the trick is finding someone comparable to Mitch - thats the real problem
I don't think he's underpaid either.

Who is this comparable replacement who will cost less?

Dow Jones up 1500 overnight.
He’s not even in office yet and things are improving.

A huge risk we’ll win less than 7 games next year? We’re not going to know if the risk was acceptable until the 2026 season when he would’ve been off contract anyway

Not sure, but I think there may be a couple of halves who will be at Moses level in 1-2 years and I am not sure they will cost Moses money, just because I think Moses will always be at the top earnings bracket of his particular level.

Yes well could you imagine all the bs that would have gone on if Gutherson was still at Parramatta in '25, still unsigned for 26 and the bs shows like 360 absolutely hammering the club week after week for not getting another deal done, especially with Gutherson's manager making us pay in the media.

Let's be realistic, this was the best option for both parties and it was smart to get it over and done with.

I see your point and of course its a risk -i just think its an inevitable risk and that we are best placed to absorb that risk now, when the only way is up and it gives us twelve months to work on the new format.

to that end, I see the judgement as being in two years, not 12 months - we are either fast tracking our inevitable pain and recovery or we are moving on to a bright new era and quick!

St George-Illawarra have officially tabled a three-year offer worth an estimated $2.5 million for Eels captain Clint Gutherson.

The formal offer has eventuated after the Dragons secured a medical report on the talented fullback.

The assessment was given the green light by the Dragons football department to proceed with a multi-year offer, that will include his immediate switch from Parramatta to St George-Illawarra next season.

More to come

Totally agree. Looking at it from JR's POV, with a 4 yr deal for himself, time is something he doesn't have the luxury to waste.
We are extremely fortunate the Dragons took him. I also have a good feeling about Yongi.

Same medical team that checked Volkman?
