Emerging Rob Jennings is good enough for the Blues but not the NRL

Good enough for the NSW Blues but not good enough for the NRL.

Rob Jennings found himself in the bizarre situation on Thursday as being the only player among Brad Fittler's Emerging Blues - the Generation Next of NSW Origin hopefuls - still without a deal for the 2019 season.

Jennings signed a one-year extension with South Sydney and continues to train with them, but the contract cannot be registered until the Redfern club free up about $300,000 in their salary cap.

Souths had originally banked on Alex Johnston finding a new home, which could still happen if Greg Inglis informs new coach Wayne Bennett he wants to play fullback - Johnston's position of choice - and looks elsewhere.

It is understood St George Illawarra, the Wests Tigers, Parramatta and even Manly have all inquired about Jennings, who is holding out hope for a Christmas miracle at his current employer.

The unique circumstances were not lost on Jennings, who parked himself outside Inglis for most of the season and bagged 19 tries in 21 games.

"I signed a deal, but with the cap issues, the club's looking to resolve it. I'll sit and wait and see what happens,'' Jennings told the Herald.

"I'm trying not to worry about it and just focusing on getting my body right. Hopefully there is some good news and there's something tossed up before Christmas.

"It's been good at Souths, the boys are ripping in and Wayne [Bennett] has been really welcoming. I've spoken to Wayne, he's a man of not many words, but we both don't know what will happen.

"Hopefully I can stay at Souths. I wanted to stay at Souths, I enjoyed my time there and feel like I've got more to learn and offer, especially outside Greggy. It's something I can't control. We'll see what happens.''

Johnston was deep in negotiations with Cronulla before they signed Shaun Johnson. Souths have made it known they are happy for him to pursue a deal elsewhere if he can find one. Corey Allen is another fullback option at Souths and a young player who has worked with Bennett.

As Jennings is chased by rivals, older brother Michael was reportedly shopped to rivals by Parramatta. The younger sibling quipped Michael was loving becoming a recent first-time father, saying it was ''about time he settled down''.

Like Tevita Pangai jnr, Jennings is one of the Tongan contingent drafted into the NSW ranks. Souths right winger Campbell Graham also joined in Thursday's session.

Fittler was impressed with the fresh faces and praised the condition they were in and said he needed ''20 players primed and ready'' for next year's series, which was the case when the Blues finally ended Queensland's domination with a 2-1 series victory.

Because he supposedly wants $400k, which he isn’t worth

He got 2 international games because they were the next games he was scheduled to play.

If a bloke is over the limit and crashes into parked cars he should be f**king stoked to get a 2 game suspension.
With him only recording a low-range PCI, I reckon the accident and the crashing into parked cars was more likely caused by either speed, the road conditions at the time, his relative inexperience driving or a combination of these - I can't see low-range having the level of impact that resulted.

The NRL welcomes third-party agreements as long as the sponsor is not affiliated with the club.

I agree that that is a good possibility, unfortunately for him he doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt imo. In fact it’s quite possible that some medium to high range drink drivers have accidents that weren’t caused by their inebriation but tough shit to them

You do realise Lomax was picked over Aitken in the finals? You do realise Dragons have lost MacDonald? You do realise Dragons have no real definites for their wing spots? And rumours are Aitken could be moved to the back row ?
As I said Josh it depended who was the most desperate club, as usual we were. Now we're left with one, yes one, experienced half. Good luck for next year's performance!

This is why we're stuck with probably an under-performing Mennings for another year at $800k. He wanted to leave Roosters as was sick of travelling from Castle Hill to training. His other club options were Panthers (highly unlikely they'd take him back) or Bulldogs (same travelling problems) so Parra WAS the only club. But what did we do, panic, panic, pay $800k (which is huge coin for any centre btw) and give him an option IN HIS FAVOUR! Wtf no wonder we're a joke.

Same with Watmough, 4 years for a 32yo, same with Foran $1.2m with a $1m get out of jail free card if HE WANTED TO LEAVE, not if the club wanted him to leave. And the joke goes on and on! And don't get me started on why BA signed Andrew Davey, a 27yo journeyman, and re-signed Gower. They're taking up 2 roster spots that could/should have gone to our juniors or better quality imports.

The fact is we're not going to know how much free cap space we already have or will have after Norman leaves. But we can assume that if we're bringing Dylan Brown or anyone else into the top 30 they will be getting an upgrade.

We just won't know how much, so why death-ride?
Brown already in top 30 isn't he?

Just 800k for the Donkeys?? lol cough cough bulshit cough cough.
No the bullshit belongs to the Rorters, their squad and $200k in TPAs. Nothing to see here NRL. What I can't believe is how many times Politis loses on the golf green, you'd think he'd learn by now.
