RWC opener breaks TV record
| 7sport.com.au ... 11 October 2003 05:10pm |
The opening match of the World Cup between Australia and Argentina was the most watched rugby match in Australian television history, according to figures released by the Seven Network.

A peak national audience of 2,770,000 people in Australia's five largest cities - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth - watched the Wallabies open the defence of their Cup crown with a 24-8 win over Argentina at Telstra Stadium.

Earlier, a peak audience of 2,543,000 people tuned in to the opening ceremony.

In Sydney the audience peaked at 1,142,000 people for the match, while in Melbourne 634,000 people tuned in for the match and 656,000 for the opening ceremony.

Brought to you by AAP.

What i found interesting was that they listed the peak audience but there was no mention of the averages audience, in which most people base their opinions upon...

Did people think they are good ratings for the opener or do you think they are below par... i am still undecided...

That outrates the NRL grand final I think.

In the five main cities union peaked at 2.7m while the league averaged 2.35 so it would be interesting to see the average of the union. However in Sydney it peaked at 1.17 while the league averaged 1.15 so it surely beats it on that front. Even so surely the 1.17m will see the difference in standard and excitement.

Found the peak in Sydney its something like 1,370,000 but over the whole of australia its about 2.57 so less than union. Seeing as though this was a national team though its not that good. What interest does someone in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne have in league at least they can support the union as australia.

I find the comment at the bottom funny... i mean what about all the grand final BBQ's and parties at peoples homes and the people at clubs and pubs... We had around 20 people at our house for the grand final... I have not heard anyone yet attend a party at someone's for the RU...
Does anyone remember the averages for the NRL with each state, cause i can not seem to find them...

There were about 6 or 7 live sites around Sydney with up to 10 000 people if not more at them. The NRL grand final didn't have them and, while the pubs and clubs would have had similar numbers for both I'd say there were more people watching the RU per screen.

One article I read said that there were an estimated 965 000 people watching at live sites and clubs and pubs. It doesn't really matter though, the ratings are all that count, but advertisers might take note I guess. That's a big flaw of tv ratings though. All big sporting events are watched by far more people per screen than top rating shows like Big Brother Australian Idol, Millionaire and Nine news etc but in the ratings (except for the biggest games) they come up similar. TV ratings are flawed in a lot of ways though really.

I also read where half the TV audiences and people in pubs and clubs will never watch a rugby match again. They didn't take to well to be driven into a coma at the start of their weekend.

RU keeps harping on about peak figures and how they are more important than average figures.

That's crap.

Peak figures generally happen towards the end of the broadcast when people who are interested in the next show switch on, and those that watched the Rugby still watching. So peak audiences mean nothing at all.

no game since has drawn over 400,000 sydney viewers......

Says a lot IMO

Not knocking the code or anything, but that does say a lot if you look at it objectively

It would be interesting to know how last nights game went. People slagged the NRL GF's ratings because it was shown in prime time so how did it go against last nights game?

If it hasn't outrated the NRL GF I'd like to know how they figure Australia has "embraced" Union.

I'd actually be surprised if last nights game outrated Cast Away which had been released in the Cinemas, on video and shown on Pay TV already.

Based on what I heard on the radio this afternoon Cast Away did beat it. Indiana Jones beat it for most of the telecast as well.
