Ryan-Pringle Trophy

The Newtown and Balmain RLFC's have announced that their PL clashed will be played for a new perpetual trophy, the Ryan-Pringle Trophy. It is named after two servants of both clubs, Trevor Ryan and Neil Pringle.

Great stuff. This adds to the Frank Hyde Cup (Newtown-Norths). I think there's also a Joint Venture Cup (Balmain-Wests) but I'm not sure.

PL is a great competition in that its clubs can provide such celebrations of the history and traditions of Rugby League. For Newtown, the Frank Hyde Cup has been a great vehicle for press coverage and attendances (helped by the great man himself).

With all the old clubs in PL I think there is more avenue for these perpetual trophies, so long as they don't take the gloss off the competition.

Newtown v Canberra: Daly-Osborne
Newtown v Wests: Poole-Raudonikis
Newtown v Saints: Johnny Raper
Norths v Souths: Duncan Thompson
Norths v Manly: Ken Irvine

What do you guys think?

Uncle Neil (Bing) will be very proud.
& will have another reason to come to Sydney & watch the footy.
Bit hard to leave his paradise though, living it up semi retired, on Kirra beach.

Uncle Neil does everything.
champion bloke. As is his lovely Mary, a champion person.
Just sold their restraraunt & now are semi-retired living on the beach.
Still keeps in touch with many legends living around the area, namely the flash & the wombat.
Had a heart attack 18 months ago & was quite lucky. Slowed him up a bit, but he's still strong.
& he was tough merkin on the feild.

Jeffles,

Am surprised to see that you haven't made a gracious posting congratulating the mighty Balmain Tigers on winning the inaugural Ryan-Pringle Shield 2 weeks ago.

It was a hard fought match and has set the scene for what promises to be a mighty rivalry for the next few seasons. Just hope that we can continue to hold your blokes at bay - why do they always find an extra gear when they play against us?

Looking forward to next year's clashes with anticipation! Go them Tigers!!

Just a question here - was it a three-game series like with the F Hyde Cup? I'm not in Oz at the moment, so I don't know whether we played a trial against the Tiges early on in the year.

If not, and it was purely the two games, I take it it was based on some sort of agreed number of tries formula or combined score over both games thing, right?

Otherwise, though, I'd be happier with a three-game deal. That way, there's a bit more chance of a clear-cut winner. Nevertheless, 8using the same format, we still managed to split the Frank Hyde Cup with Norths last year (a win apiece and a draw).

I must admit I don't mind as much losing a perpetual trophy like the Pringle/Ryan or F Hyde Cups to the Bears or Tigers. I'd just hate losing one to either the Saints or, God forbid, those parasites Souths.

Regards,
TDT-1

2 games with the winner decided by aggregate.

Congratulations to Balmain for the win. Their second half performance at Leichhardt earned them the victory. I look forward to these clashes in the future where there are FANS AND HISTORY instead of pokies and empty seats.
