Salford get stadium go ahead

Written by: ESL Media23/11/2005 Views: 33

Salford have been given the green light to press ahead with plans to build a new 20,000-seater stadium just off the M62 motorway.

Salford City Council has approved the Reds' ambitious proposals for the £32million stadium, along with a hotel, shopping and leisure facilities, on a 30-hectare brown-field site near junction 11 of the M62.

Salford have played at their present ground, The Willows, for the last 100 years.

My guess is it would still go ahead regardless? Some other clubs like Doncaster have had new stadium plans approved, and they've never been in the superleague. Councils approve them as assets for the local area, and often they have positive features that aren't just exclusive to the league team.

I said Salford super stadium/super casino would never happen and I was right.

As I said a while ago, there much be better and cheaper ways of storing 18,000 seats in the slums of Northern England.

In some ways it is a shame to lose the history of "The Willows". It was a great ground for Salford throughout much of the 20th century.

And what a great side Salford had in the 1930s. One of the best English club sides of all time judging by their impressive record.

(And they are of course the official holders of the nickname "The Red Devils" well before it was pinched by Manchester United. The name was given to them in France during their tour in the mid-1930s.)

Salford is, strangely, a potential growth area for rugby league. The lack of a major Manchester club has allowed the coverage of the game in that city to drop off from the glory days.

Hopefully, a rejuvenated Salford would improve that state of affairs.

Shame that Broughton Rangers aren't still around to generate a bit of a local derby though (or that Swinton are only a shadow of their glorious past).
