Statement: Sam Backo​

Statement released from the Backo family:
Christabel, Sam’s wife and extended family appreciate the support and prayers received for Sam.
Sam had a heart attack yesterday morning and at this stage remains in a critical condition.
The family has asked to please respect their privacy at this time.

Favourite memory of him was his first season, he was attracting a few wraps and the Raiders were up against the Bunnies, the home of legendary hard man Les Davidson. Davidson obviously resented an opponent getting a wrap and went looking for him early in defence. An almighty collision, Big Sam carried on with BAU while Davo went missing for the rest of the game.

Genuine try-scoring prop from 5 or 10 metres out, would just bulldoze his way over, similar to Josh Papali'i in that regard. Best prop in the game for 2-3 years there in the 2nd half of the 80s.

Was in a pub in Canberra many years ago and tried to have a chat to a chick. The Models were playing on stage. Bloke comes up to me and says ‘ do you know who she is? That’s Sam Backos wife and he’s watching you from the bar’. I ran.
