One to Watch – Randwick Trials

Tara Madgwick

Lonhro finished 2013/ 2014 as the leading sire of Australian winners setting a new record with his tally of 159 and among them was one winner who promises to be a spring star for Godolphin.

Much hyped colt Sarajevo was given a little send along at the Randwick trials on Friday morning, stretching his legs to win a strong 840 metre trial featuring numerous stakes horses by a length and a half in 49.76 seconds.

Prepared by John O’Shea and ridden by James McDonald, Sarajevo looks to be primed for his return with the Group I ATC Golden Rose an obvious early target.

Sarajevo looked well above average at his only run when winning easily at Randwick back in April and has only to run up to his looks and impressive international pedigree to become a star!

A half-brother to minor stakes-winner Ludka, Sarajevo is from the unraced Danehill mare Laleta (IRE), a half-sister to Group I Irish Oaks winner Lailani.

Might be reading too much into it but hackevoy has been booked for the moody runner better land (shamardal x Amelia's dream) and jmac to ride Sarajevo. Beware.

It's a pretty good field actually.

Moods must have an opinion of it, it's only had the one start. Very well bred indeed, Amelia's Dream was an absolute freak!

I'm not the type to say something outlandish but if she hadn't of got injured early she may have had a career that rivaled some of the greats of the last decade...Black Caviar, Miss Andretti, So You Think, More Joyous, Wazn, Pierro, Weekend Hussler etc

Rosebud is a very good little race this year, usually it's just full of the B-graders heading to the big 3yo racers and very few make it to that level. Would be surprised if there aren't at least a few that go on to bigger things from this one.

I think Sarajevo has the Golden Rose in the bag on that run,was fat in the paddock and wasn't knocked around in the run,Better Land was a very good run but Sarajevo's jockey basically went hands and heels to the line(only given 1 or 2 cracks in the straight) whilst Better Land was copping the whip from all angles.
