Maria Sharapova betrothed to guard

SAN DIEGO -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic says he's engaged to marry Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova.

Sasha Vujacic proposed to Maria Sharapova on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting.

"We are engaged and are both really happy," Vujacic said Thursday night before the Lakers' exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors. "It's good and now we can focus on other things."

The agent for three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova confirmed the news in an e-mail to The Associated Press. Vujacic said he proposed on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting at a friend's barbecue.

"It's was probably old school," Vujacic said. "I had to do it like a gentlemen." Vujacic said a wedding date hasn't been set.

The Slovenian guard returned to action Thursday, a week after getting a concussion when teammate Lamar Odom accidentally elbowed him in the face during practice. Vujacic averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 67 games for the Lakers last season, his sixth with the club.
Sharapova won her first major title at Wimbledon in 2004, when she was 17. She went on to win the 2006 U.S. Open and 2008 Australian Open and also reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

After shoulder surgery and an elbow injury forced her to miss time the past two seasons, Sharapova is currently ranked 18th.

Probably has something to do with the $5m+ salary. I had no idea what Vujacic was earning but have just seen it's $5,475,113!!! Now that's a ridiculous contract!

Found that on http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9168 - can't believe the Lakers only have 4 players under contract in 2013-14 but they're still above the current cap! A re-signed Bynum (in theory) will put them well above the tax line as well.

What you think Sharapova is after his money?

Sharapova would earn $20m+ herself from endorsements and prize money easily.

Yeah was gonna say, am pretty sure that Sharapova would healthily out-earn Sasha.

In regards to the Lakers contacts, Walton and Sasha are both heaththrobs...well worth the money they're on :sarcasm:

Ridders, you see Jordan Farmar rain down 3's on the Knicks the other day? Could be in for a big season with the injury prone Harris. What you think?

Bit disappointing to see him go, thought he was alright of the bench last season.

Wasn't too long ago that he seemed as the obvious heir-apparent to Fisher for the starting PG gig.

It's possible that he found himself limited by the triangle and wanted to go to a team where he could show-case his talents more. As you said, Harris is not one who's shown a propensity to stay healthy, so Farmar may get the chance he's craved.

Was happy LA managed to keep Shan-Wow. He could turn into a very good back-up SG.

This is Milf region, but Kobe's done fairly well for himself as well. Kobe's a pretty handsome guy though, so it was to be expected.
