Scots winger switches codes
From correspondents in London
January 12, 2005

SCOTLAND rugby union international winger Jonathan Steel is to switch codes after signing a two-year contract with National League club Hull Kingston Rovers.

England-born Steel, 24, who has five full Scottish caps, will join Hull KR when his current contract with Celtic League side Borders runs out at the end of the month.

"I enjoyed rugby union for five years," Steel said. "I've played at the highest level and I've done everything there is to do.

"I am ambitious to play in Super League and so are Hull Kingston Rovers.

I'm sure together we'll do well."

Good pick up for Hull and will strengthen the Scottish national team in time if he is a success in the game

I know the Scottish game over there is not exactly strong at the moment (they barely cracked 30,000 for a Wallabies/Scottish international when i was over there) so perhaps there may be a few more looking to switch codes...who knows!

Cheers

Great news! Anyone know if he is any good? Just because he is a Union International doesn't mean he is good. ;-)

He's a scottish international...Which means he has a Scottish Grandparent (Possibly, remember the 30 time capped scottish international who found out his Grandfather was Welsh and not Scottish?) and probably couldn't break out of the Zurich Cups National Leagues.

Borders is also a club in serious trouble, so he could just be a rat fleeing the ship.

Oh...Go Doncaster in NL1!

The whole Scottish Rugby Union is in serious trouble at the moment - the chairman resigned earlier this week, and the whole union is broke.

I think that Steele might be English by birth.

DIEHARD, he has played only 5 games for Scotland, and currently can't even get a a game with Borders on a regular basis. He says he should pick the game up in a couple of weeks though, so this should be interesting to watch.

Glad to see you like seeing people lose their jobs. Just don't get angry when someone laughs at the Diehards.

What could anyone do to the diehards that is worse than their own administration?

They could always get jobs with the Scottish Rugby League, we aren't downsizing, we are looking for expand. :D

Rugby union will struggle on and survive in Scotland in one form or another even if the SRU go bankrupt and/or implode.

They probably could, provided they didn't mind relocating to the SRL headquarters in Sydney. ;-)

Not very up to dat list there rugged. Take a look at the 2004 Med Cup squad: 9 players in the squad from the Lebanon local comp. Now that is progress.

Scotland RU has had over 100 years of uninterrupted, govt assisted development and it's still totally ruined and incapable of producing Scottish born players.

It seems to me that it is always the rugby league history buffs on here that are bringing up ancient history. That's what we keep trying to tell them, it is now 2005.
