Mixed fortune in lower grade trials

There were mixed fortunes for Canberra Raiders halfbacks when the Premier League and Jersey Flegg sides played trials in Windsor on Saturday night.
Premier League halfback William Zillman scored two tries in Canberras 44-38 win over two combined Windsor teams, while Under 20s halfback Michael Dobson suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone in his teams 12-28 loss to the Penrith Panthers.
Zillman, who recently resigned with the Raiders, is rated very highly at the club. His combination with new trial player Scott Briggs in the halves was a highlight of the performance. Richard Killian and Justin Giteau also shared the hooking role superbly.
The Raiders scored eight tries - Zillman, Brent Crisp, David Milne, Jason Moon, Killian, Adrian Purtell and Nick Fredericks all crossing the line.
Adrian Purtell made a promising comeback from long-term injury, playing the full 80 minutes. Fullback Crisp also kicked six goals.
The match was played over four 20 minute quarters, with the Raiders taking on a fresh opposition after half-time.
It was a tribute to our fitness, because our best periods were the second and fourth quarters, said new Raiders Premier League coach Dave Furner.
New Jersey Flegg coach Andrew McFadden had a tougher initiation against the Panthers, especially with the injury to play-maker Dobson.
Dobson, who represented the Australian Schoolboys last year, had to come off in the 23rd minute when he suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone.
Outside backs Joe Onarato, Kyle Lodge and Leigh Fisher scored Canberras three tries, while Penrith crossed for five.
Canberra props Kieran Whalley and Cy Lasscock were among the best on the field.
