The Manly Sea Eagles have appointed well credentialed Auckland based coach Mark Gardiner to head up Manly's New Zealand coaching and development program.
Gardiner was recommended to Manly by former New Zealand Test, Wigan and Sea Eagles coach Graham Lowe who is heading up the bold scheme with the full support of the Sea Eagles organization.

Coach of junior representative teams in Auckland, Gardiner is being groomed for a future coaching career with the Sea Eagles and will be flown to Australia during the off season to take part in the NRL side's summer training program. Gardiner will arrange, with Lowe, an elite group of New Zealand youngsters to take part in training programs with a view to providing a pathway to the NRL through the Manly Sea Eagles. Manly will soon announce a sponsorship arrangement with a leading Auckland based development company to support the scheme and support New Zealand youth.

Manly Chief Executive, Ian Thomson said his club was delighted at the revival of the Manly brand name in New Zealand. "We have had great success with Kiwis in our side over many years.”Darrell Williams was the first New Zealand player to play in a premiership winning side in Sydney and players like Kevin and Tony Iro, Matthew Ridge, Craig Innes and a host of others have carried on the tradition. "Indeed Awen Guttenbeil came through the Manly junior scheme from Auckland, “Thomson said.

Thomson stressed that the Sea Eagles were in no way setting up in opposition to the New Zealand Warriors. "We admire what they have and are achieving but we are coming in through the front door simply to provide an alternative for the host of young talent being produced in New Zealand.”They all can't play for one club and we are simply saying we are here with an opportunity to play in one of the great clubs of the Rugby League world” Thomson said.

New Manly head coach Des Hasler is planning a coaching clinic in Auckland for the squad members prior to next year's NRL premiership. "I was impressed with Mark Gardiner's knowledge of the game and his coaching methods in a recent visit to Sydney - we will give him all the support he needs to make this work and he will be part of our coaching team,"Hasler said. Gardiner has been appointed Manly's New Zealand Development and Recruitment Manager. He will work in close contact with the recently appointed Sea Eagles recruitment manager, Noel Cleal, who is regarded as the best connected recruitment manager in Australian Rugby League. He was formerly with Parramatta where he recruited current Test stars Jamie Lyon and Nathan Hindmarsh as unknown country teenagers.
