SEA Eagles chairman Scott Penn has slammed attempts by North Sydney officials to block Manly players from visiting schools in the Bears territory in the new year.
As part of the NRLs One Community Carnival in the first week in February, the NRL has allocated the Sea Eagles to visit schools in the Berowra/Asquith region.
The area is part of the North Sydney catchment, but the Bears do not have an NRL licence.
Irate Bears officials believe their NRL feeder club, South Sydney, should be the ones visiting the schools.
But Penn yesterday told The Manly Daily his club was within its rights to visit the schools and encourage the North Sydney juniors to play rugby league.
From our perspective, we are able to provide these juniors a pathway into the NRL, thats something the Bears cant do, Penn said.
They (Norths) obviously think its part of their territory, but theres no reason why we wont continue to get junior players from Asquith and Berowra.
The Bears dont have a licence with the NRL. We certainly shouldnt be denying the kids an opportunity to play rugby league.
Long-time Bears juniors coach Kevin Nicholls said Manly will not be welcomed by the schools.
We are not prepared to have Manly players coming into our schools, he said.
We would welcome South Sydney players, and we would expect South Sydney players to visit. The North Sydney area is not the Manly area.
NRL Director of Community Relations Trish Crews said its up to Norths and Manly to sort out the situation.
We hope commonsense will prevail, this is for the kids, she said.
Manly junior coaching and development manager Dave Warwick said the Bears should form a joint-venture with Souths.
This is about kids getting involved in the game, he said.
