Season 2013 Infographic

There isn't too much to say about this one. It was built primarily off the 2013 stats spreadsheet that I made and focuses on the statistical highlights and low-lights of the 2013 season.

As a caution to everyone who reads it - it isn't all that pretty (both the stats and the aesthetics :p) and it is LONG as it covers every major statistical category.

Something to note:

The Rookie of the Year recipient may be a contentious one. The points scheme that delivered the verdict is adapted from NRL Supercoach, which does reward attacking categories.

Here is the link to the infographic. The link might take a short time to load due to the size of the image.

If anyone is confused by any shorthand terminology (which I avoided unless necessary) used in the infographic, my spreadsheet contains a relevant legend for reference.

Some quick insights from the infographic:

32.23% (10/31) of our NRL roster comprised of rookies, which is a crazy ratio and signals just how poor our standing Top 25 was this year.

Jacob Loko and Jarryd Hayne both produced excellent running numbers. They both had good work rates and were highly productive in meterage and breaking tackles.

Our playmakers struggled big time in 2013. With Hayne playing a more traditional fullback role under Stuart, none of our NRL players cracked double digits for Linebreak Assists or Try Assists. Alarmingly, the trend continues in the NYC where we have similar numbers as our play-makers in Zach-Dockar Clay, Sam Gorman and Mitchell Brasington all had solid running numbers but struggled to put others through gaps.

Our NYC defensive structures did an abysmal job of protecting our halves as Brasington, Gorman and ZDC all feature on the overall 1-on-1 tackle counts. Admittedly they spent some time at fullback, lock and hooker respectively but I can also add the weight of my anecdotal experience to the matter, having often seen our halves get isolated in defence while viewing games this year.

Joseph Ualesi's Rd.13 effort against the Roosters was nothing short of herculean and easily goes down as the best single performance by an Eel in 2013. The numbers he generated were crazy and I actually had to double check my Excel formula to make sure I hadn't make a mistake while transposing the formula across the players.

Jarryd Hayne was easily our most dominant player in the NRL in 2013, despite his extensive injuries, as he snared the top three best single efforts (Rd.23, Rd.1, Rd. 7) for our NRL team. He backed this up by running first as our top rated player overall in 2013. Tim Mannah lacked the explosive efforts of Hayne but was a rock up front, running second overall.

Perhaps surprisingly, given the often understandable complaints about him, Joseph Paulo came in third as he produced good numbers across a range of fields in attack and defence while Radradra and Loko round out the top five on the back of massive efforts in key attacking categories (Runs/LB/Tries and TB/Runs/RM respectively).

Forwards dominated the standings for our NYC squad as Pauli Pauli, Daniel Alvaro and Junior Paulo all clocked in strong individual seasons. ZDC also joins them in the top five. Above them all was Joseph Ualesi who average a club high 73.40 Pts per game, including posting the second highest offloading statistic in the entire NYC behind Bryce Cartwright.

Yeah nice work.

Is there any of our Top 25 players that didnt play a game in NRL? I know Nathan Smith didnt play, but not sure if he would be classed as a Top 25 player.

The following members of our fulltime squad didn't make an appearance:

Eisenhuth
Gilbert
Lasalo
Ma'afu
Mau
McKenzie
Penese
Smith
Tautai

Lasalo and Tautai are (were) possibly in the top 25. I'd say none of the rest are.

Of the above, the only ones contracted for next year are Manu Mau and Lorenzo Ma'afu.

Well from this we know that we need Hayne & Loko fit all next year. Honestly a fit Hopoate and Loko should be one of the better centre pairings in the NRL.

Hopefully a fit Loko moves into the forwards where he can make better use of his strength, and where his poor lateral movement is less exposed.

It will also strengthen a weak position (edge forward) and clear up a log jam at a position in which we are very strong (centre).

I was all for keeping Loko in the centres earlier in the year but the more i think about it the more i think he should train in the off season as a back rower and by the end of next season i could see him being a certain starter there.

Well done 40/20.

It's true that you can learn something new everyday. I now know what an infographic is.

Now is just need to find out what an intersex person is and I'll go home so much wiser. --> LINK
