Great. And we've brought back the king of princess cuddlers in Tom Shines. Just when I thought the club had ran out of cheap gimmicks.

Anyone who isn't a fan of Pascoe should be happy. One CEO quit when the board forced Shines to be extended despite failing to take us to the finals for consecutive years after winning the grand final. Shines got the next CEO sacked for wanting to put KPIs on the coach.

This made the next CEO a lame duck, forced to extend Shines after the boys took him to the finals, but even that CEO was dumped by the board a mere six months after he made the right choice to sack Shines when he wouldn't step aside as head coach.

Both Madge and Pascoe's days are numbered.

If you are right I reckon it's shit but let's face it it's shit now.

With reasonable certainty, the 3 highlighted are probably gone next season?

The value of the top two is: $1.3m. Not sure if we have any $'s left for this year, considering we still have one more player to sign? Hopefully TPJ or Finucane?

80. BJ $550k
38. Russell Packer $750k

We would need to replace these 2 (at least), so who do we target?

A couple of interesting articles, from the other side?

I personally think the answer is obvious - the best players are juniors, and the most disappointing players are seniors. So Madge has his footballing ability locked up in players who don’t yet have the experience to fight tougher and smarter under adversity. And the players we turn to under adversity, the experienced once, aren’t playing good football even in absence of pressure.

I personally think Tamou is doing OK (he has almost no experienced support in the forwards), but guys like Mbye, Nofo, Jimmy Jet, Musgrove, Chee Kam, BJ, Packer have net negative output.

I think the fix is less obvious - get in more experienced heads, or be patient and try to get the kids confident to be performing to a more consistent level in difficult matches.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Tigers players over 45 maches: Twal (82), Mikaele (54), Liddle (57), Luch (79), Garner (54), Douiehi (64), MCK (88).
Total = 7
Over 100: Tamou (284), Jet (162), Packer (184), Ofa (123), Nofo (155), Mbye (150), Maumolo (108), BJ (225), Brooks (164),
Total = 9

Who in the >100 club is playing well? As I said Tamou is OK 6/10, Ofa I think 7/10, Brooks 7.5/10, rest hopeless - that’s coming on 1000 games of experience with poor 2021 output. Maumolo gets a pass because he’s just arrived.

The 50+ match club haven’t really kicked on - Twal is alright, Mikaele inconsistent, Liddle has only recently strung matches together. Luch is our best attacker and worst defender, Garner is middling (how did he already get to 54 matches?), Douiehi good, MCK career benchie.

So Madge not getting output from these experienced players. They are the backbone of the side. He inherited almost all of them, but you would also hope he could coach a good number of them to play to their best ability.

However I’ll argue that the “best” output of these 50+ match players has never really been that good. Guys like Mikaele, Garner, MCK, Packer, their career-best football has been short-lived, a year at most, so it can’t only be Madge as a coach. E.g. you’d hope Madge could get the best out of Luch, and for a good while that has been the case, but also St George didn’t let him go because he was an easy player to get results out of.

Barely any of the experienced players are hand-selected juniors - they are almost entirely cast-offs and some-risk players that Tigers hope to turn around. Brooks is one, Twal arguably was poached, so was Luch. The rest were basically released / unwanted by former clubs. I don’t know if that is specifically on Madge, that his most experienced players could only be bought off clubs that didn’t want them any longer, and he doesn’t have a core of experienced club juniors.

By comparison to Melbourne Storm, best team going around.

Storm 2021 players over 45 matches: Hughes (75), Jacks (48), G Jennings (49), Kamikamica (49), Olam (54), Cheese (78), Reimis Smith (65), Paps (48).
Total = 8
Over 100: JAC (121), NAS (138), J Bromwich (266), K Bromwich (184), Finucane (212), Kaufusi (146), Munster (144), Welch (110).
Total = 8

Of the +100 club, 6/8 were Melbourne Storm junior selections, 2 were head-hunted from other clubs. Of the ~50s, about half are juniors/debutants, 1 head-hunted (Paps).

Of the +100 players, 100% are rep players. So Bellamy is getting very good value out of his experience, and his highest paid / most experienced players are also the best performers.

So is that entirely the coach, or does he have some luxury of having head-hunted or junior-base players forming the core of his experienced group? Aren’t many rejects from other clubs there, although of course you take into account that Storm are so successful they don’t really need to look at rejects.

Storm’s junior players also have been able to wait patiently and come through a successful system, mentored by experienced rep-level players (in some cases, hall-of-fame players).

Whether or not Madge has the skills, he doesn’t have the luxury of that back-history that the Storm have, both in terms of smart long-term recruitment, junior development in a successful environment, no need to sign rejects, top-level experienced players whose best football is elite-level. Madge’s most experienced players have almost never been elite-level, not under any coach or any club.

Now Bellamy developed all that himself, so you can’t wipe it aside as being an achievement. BUT, when Bellamy joined Storm had played finals 3 times already, missed it twice (years before him), were being bankrolled by News Ltd, not allowed to fail/linger due to NRL multi-city strategy. Bellamy inherited Matt Orford, Billy Slater, Cam Smith, Scott Hill, Rodney Howe, Matt Geyer, Robbie Kearns, Stephen Kearney.

A year later he had Cronk, a year later Inglis - they were both already in the Norths Devils system (Storm feeder) when Bellamy arrived. Any of these named Storm players have played at a high level at other clubs too, so it’s not just the coach, they are inherently good in other systems.

And within 8 seasons, Bellyache’s side were done for systematic salary cap cheating, which tells you after his first several seasons, they conspired to set up and retain an illegal level of players, to either hold onto experienced elites or experienced juniors, i.e. keep the leadership whilst not losing the new rep-quality juniors.

This isn’t to defend Madge, just contrasting the rosters and where the rosters came from.

Right now we would probably be considered the worst coaching job in the comp. if we get rid of Madge we will really be reaching for the bottom of the barrel in terms of coaching appointments. Madge is half way through his rebuild, I would be inclined to stick it out with him rather than give in to the pampered princesses again

It's a template we need to copy. Hopefully without getting caught before it bears fruit. Also, Melbourne have $3 million a year in additional TP payments to players. This is more than triple the most by any other club in the NRL. As far as I know this has never been investigated by the NRL. TP payments must be at arms length to be legal. Therefore, the club can have no involvement with them at all. Funny how no one has has ever asked how $3 million in player sponsorship money just calls up, unsolicited, and expresses interest in keeping Melbourne ahead. All in a city where (aside from about 15,000 hard-core supporters) most people hope that league would just f**k off and die.

Great analysis Tigerm. Appreciate the effort you put in.

Thanks again Tigerm.

That looks very top heavy. So just like every other major company in the first world. We don't seem to have enough people in recruitment. Unless we have contractors in different areas of Australia and the rest on the world who aren't on the books. And our finance manager is dead.

‘Get on board or get going’: Kent blasts Tigers’ player revolt over Maguire’s ‘I need men’ comment

Mark St John
Mark St John from Fox Sports
@markdfstjohn
July 11th, 2021 3:04 pm
Paul Kent has launched a stinging attack on the Tigers players after reports some stars have turned on coach Michael Maguire after a comment he made after the loss to the Rabbitohs.

Maguire said in his press conference that he needs men at the club, which ruffled a few feathers amongst the playing group.

“They lost to the Storm 66-16 on the Sunshine Coast and it was a very similar story to their opening half against the Bunnies at Leichhardt Oval,” James Hooper said on Triple M.

“So the players can point fingers and blow up and blame Madge and try and throw off everywhere else, but in relation to the comment that he said about “I need men” like we are all adults.

“Boo hoo, cry me a river like who cares? Get over it.”

Gordon Tallis believes the Tigers club need to support their coach, so that things like player revolts don’t happen.

“The people around him need to support him,” Tallis said.

“So when the players go and whinge to the assistant coach, to the trainers, to the board members, to the CEO it falls on deaf ears.”

“Managers and media are the main ones,” Hooper interjected.

“Too bad because they keep doing it, so who do they have Tim Sheens, Michael Potter, Jason Taylor, Ivan Cleary. There is four in what 10 years?” Tallis said.

Kent called on Maguire to find the players responsible and move them out of the club immediately.

“The best thing Michael Maguire can do is find out who the players are and move them on,” Kent said.

“A lot of good coaches who stick around for a while they identify very quickly who the cancers are in the joint. The guys who bitch and moan.

“When you see players in a dressing room starting to get into their little groups that is when you have got to be wary.

“Once they start doing that and if you don’t know what they are talking about and if they are having a bitch and moan about your coaching or whatever they are the guys you have got to move on.”

Tallis called on the senior players to squash player revolts before they happen.

“I think you need strong leadership and the senior guys just go, listen guys shut up this is what we are doing,” Tallis said.

“I didn’t agree with all my coaches, but whatever he said he is the boss. That’s it he is the boss and whatever he tells you to do you do it.

“Just shut up and get on with it and after training you can say hey Mate why did we do that? But you never do it on the spot.”

Kent believes the Tigers don’t have enough players that want to win a premiership and they need to move on those that are merely just happy being NRL players.

“I’ll tell you a couple of facts about the Tigers, one they don’t have good enough players to win the comp,” Kent said.

“Two they don’t have tough enough players to win the comp. Three the administration hasn’t been strong enough in terms of standing up to the players because the club is just continually rotating through coaches.

“They have identified Michael Maguire as a coach who has won premierships at two different competitions with two different teams.

“He has got the ability to do it, so they have identified him as the guy that can do it for them so now they have got to stay the course as well.

“What they have got to the players is get on board or get going. It is as simple as that.

“To continue to let this club bitch and moan through another season of non-performance and let’s remember no club has gone longer without making the finals than this Tigers club.

“They haven’t made the finals since 2011 so the fact is they are not doing the right job. I don’t think there is enough Tigers players who want to win a comp.

“I was talking to a coach the other day and he said there is not enough winners here. They are just happy to play first grade.

“This is an issue that has been identified by a few other clubs.

“There is not enough players at the Tigers who are burning to win a comp. They are happy playing first grade.

“They like being known as first grade players who brush pass the line when they go to the nightclub. They get a couple of drinks vouchers when they get into the nightclub and all the pretty girls come up and ask them for a dance.”

“It’s a lifestyle for them,” Tallis said.

“Exactly Gordon, but for the great ones they want to win,” Kent said.

Apparently Storm have a bigger crew, I don't know where we stand as far as management size?

Not my effort, wished it was, but come from a few comments on the WTF.

Yep. My understanding, and I'm not putting myself up as some salary cap guru, is that you can have as much as you want but can't source them yourselves. If someone were to call the Tigers and said they wanted to pay $500,000 to help us get Finucane, we would have to refer them direct to the NRL salary cap dept, who discuss and ratify (if they're satisfied it's legal) it. This is where Marina Goh ran into trouble with her comments about using highrise Harry 'n a different way', when meriton were major sponsors. I believe she wanted him to stump up buckets of cash to start getting quality recruits, and to keep the likes of Tedesco. Unfortunately by making those comments, and having them reported, the NRL quickly put the kybosh on it. Great idea, but the sort of idea best thought, rather than spoken, especially to a reporter.

That's also where the Broncos got into trouble with their Thoroughbred Club, which led to Andrew Gee resigning and the eventual problems they have now. If Gee stayed on he would have been forced to disclose how this fund was managed 'at arms length.' Basically, it was a slush fund that rich Bronco donors deposited money into to keep their stars. Brisbane have the second highest amount of TP's, about $1 million per year.

Interestingly, the Roosters only have about $200,000 in TP's a year............

This is spot on.

‘Get on board or get going’: Kent blasts Tigers’ player revolt over Maguire’s ‘I need men’ comment

What makes you think it has never been looked at by the NRL?

What makes you think it has never been looked at by the NRL?

Because they haven't been caught cheating.

Of course the NRL may have looked at it in their usual half arsed, slap dash, Persian bizarre manner and found nothing. Left to their own devices they wouldn't have caught any systematic salary cap cheating. In the 3 major cases involving the bullgos, storm and parra they've been tipped off in every case. With the storm they had to go back a second time because they couldn't find the evidence on their first visit, even though they were told where it was. Parra were so dumb they openly discussed cheating in board meetings where minutes were being taken.

Of course it might be all legit but I doubt it. Melbourne have been quite happy to cheat in the past and the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. And if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's usually a duck.

They don't buy premierships though. I doubt they cheat now.

You would be surprised with the amount of people with more than a passing interest in the storms down here. Plenty of talk in the crib sheds at work about them, not so much the rest of the NRL though. A lot of kiwis and islanders here too, they hate afl
