from todays SMH.

NSW Rugby League officials have banned two referees for life and suspended another three for the rest of the season after a drunken sex romp at a referee development camp last Saturday night.

A referee brought a woman back to the weekend camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport residences in Narrabeen in the early hours of Sunday.

That was a breach of the league camp's rules.

While the couple had consensual sex in the open bunk-style accommodation, a number of other referees looked on. A second referee was said to be "intimately involved," according to a witness.

"It was a one-night stand," said one of the referees, who asked not to be named.

"She even came back the next day asking for the same gentleman. There weren't any complaints or anything. She was very provocative.

"A lot of blokes that did nothing at all have been dragged into it because the league has to be seen to be acting on these kinds of issues. Blokes are absolutely devastated."

AdvertisementIt has been suggested that some men took pictures of the act on their mobile phones, and they made a pact to destroy the images after being questioned by referee officials.

One of the men in the room had objected to the behaviour and reported it to referee officials.

Officials told the referees of their punishment on Wednesday night during a training session.

The general manager of the NSW Rugby League, Geoff Carr, said the behaviour of the camp participants was disappointing, especially because they had been warned by two league officials on the Friday night about expected standards of behaviour.

The referees had a full program from 6am until 10pm on Saturday and a 6.30am start on Sunday.

"They were clearly warned to be on their very best behaviour, but it is obvious that they can't go out all night and then turn up the next morning not in their best shape.

"This hasn't been perfect and the referees are like the [league] players, they have got to be pristine."

The referees are all in their early to mid 20s and some hold responsible career positions.

They regularly officiate at club level. The camp was designed to upgrade their skills to enable them to control junior representative games.

A police spokeswoman said there did not appear to be any current inquiry in progress.

Mr Carr said the NSW Rugby League was looking at allocating funding for young referee programs similar to a recent rookie camp for league players.

If the banned for life rule applied to players having consensual group sex there would be no competition left.

Still, what odds would eferees be for being the first to cause controversy in 2005?

But wait! There is more...from our buddy Jacquelin Magnay....

Referees' cruel sex ritual - find a fat woman
By Jacquelin Magnay
February 12, 2005

Junior rugby league referees on training camps have been playing a game of sexually humiliating women for a decade.

"The big quest is to find the fattest or the ugliest woman, dance with her and see if you can get her back to your room," one referee told the Herald yesterday. "It is a boy thing. It is a laugh."

Referees came forward to reveal that a drunken romp at a camp last weekend - for which five of their colleagues have been banned - was far from an isolated episode. It had been a tradition for about 10 years to have a Saturday night barbecue, then party on at a pub where one of them would pick up a woman. He would take her back to his cabin, where others would watch as they had sex.

The big difference this year was that at least one other referee was intimately involved with the woman. And the referees watching took pictures with their mobile phones - some of which are still in circulation despite a pact to destroy them.

The most crucial difference was that one referee felt so uncomfortable about what the woman was asked to do last Sunday that he asked the NSW Rugby League Referees Association to act. "It was pretty degrading what the woman was made to do," a referee said.

This year's crop of about 30 junior referees had completed the first day of their development camp at the NSW Academy of Sport at Narrabeen. Most went to the Mona Vale Hotel. By 2.30am, the pub was closing and one group kicked on at a Manly hotel, not returning until nearly 6am, in time for the 6.30 traditional Sunday morning run. But the referees from one cabin had, according to their mates, struck it lucky. They found a woman who agreed to go back to the camp, arriving about 3am.

When the camp was held previously at Breakers Conference Centre at Fairy Meadow, men took women back and often word would travel around the camp for others to come and watch.

This year, two officials warned the referees about the behaviour expected of them, sensitive to the code's tough new stand on treatment of women since the Bulldogs sex scandal last season.

Last Wednesday, the referees gathered for training at Belmore Oval to be told two of them would be banned from refereeing for life, another three for the season.

I think Jacquelin Magnay is good journalist but this is a bit over the top. As long as everything is consensual, I don't see how it is cruel or sexually humiliating.

Why would top grade football players get no ban and no-name referees get life bans? Are our codes of behaviour for refs a higher standard?????

I'd say different boards involved are the reason for the differing punishments. I wonder if legal action will be taken against the NSWRL. A life ban is quite unbelievable really.
