Sevens

As much as I love the Jets I do not think that they should be entering the World Sevens. I have a few reasons.

As an internationalist I believe the Sevens should be about seeing RL nations exhibiting themselves to the world. Club teams (NRL) should only be there to draw lots of fans. But that is an academic reason and not what really worries me about the Jets.

I think this is a high risk move for the Bluebags. Newtown has to field the cost of entering a side in the qualifier (without reimbursment if they do not win the qualifier). Also, players risk serious injury wghile playing in what is essentially a nothing tournament. I do not think the benefits of exposure (minimal because of the low chance of qualifying and the fact that TV coverage is poor) does not outweight the risks (cost and injury) that a small club like ours finds significant. Perhaps if Newtown were in a stronger situation I'd feel different.

What do you guys think?

I agree totally. The exposure is not worth the cost, nor the risk of injury to key players prior to seasons kick-off. Newtown has shown in the past to lack the depth to replace these vital players when injured.

Having said that we do risk injury to key players in France, however this comp taking place well prior to our season kick-off may allow more time to heal from niggling injuries, and the advantages of maintaining match fitness, whilst gaining further experience may outway this risk. TOUCH WOOD.

We owe our sponsors every opportunity to maximise their exposure, the players want the opportunity to showcase their talent as well. Jeffles ( the Blue Botak) Widnes is not England, Lebanon will field nearly all Australian players, Italy is made up of mainly JB and park footballers.

If we can get the opportunity to showcase our club, raise exposure it may also lead to increased sponsorship. It is hardly a physical game and most injuries would be soft tissue ones and these can happen at anytime.

Jeffles I hope you apply your great talents to more productive issues such as next weeks trivia it must be won.

The Blue Botak =D>

I think that the exposure of getting into the main 7's comp is worth squillions of dollars. Imagine having the Jets on national TV? You can't buy that kind of exposure.

When it comes to the players, 7's footy is almost like touch footy and I don't think that any serious damage can be done in a game that lasts only 14 minutes.

Thats true Westie but that can happen at any time, if you ask any of our players would they enjoy the opportunity to play in this tournament they would say yes. A big crowd, terrific atmosphere and a chance to show their wares it would only be a plus for them. It wont be easy to win through anyway but they deserve the chance.

The Blue Botak. That's not true. I actually like our directors, even that timekeeper :D

Trivia will be won. I'm waiitng for that $3000 question. Which was the first RL club in Australia? Knowing our luck the merkins will say Glebe.

Why on earth would they say Souths KT. Where did you pull that one out of?

As for TV I think 9 is in for extended coverage, hence having the Sevens so early. It was one of the few free weekends they had.

Fox had the Union Sevens on during the RL Sevens last year. I don't know if they'll show the full World Sevens this year. But that's what Pay TV is there for. To show what Ch9 won't.

I agree completely. I think its worth the risk, and ill be supporting the Magpies decision to play at the qualifiers.

I think that it's a great move to have all the merged teams back competing as themselves, plus the Jets and the Bears. That is the way to bring back the fans!

My girlfriend lives at Erskine Park so I will definately be at the sevens games to see the Bluebags play at St Marys.

Who will be the seven players representing Newtown ?

How many reserves are there, and who will they be ?

Probably not a great decision to play in the 7's. It is a bit of a nothing tournament. Does anyone really remember who played in the GF of the 7's over the past few years?

In saying that, it will be good to see the old blue bags running around on national T.V. again. Good luck in the tournament.

Last year Parra v England.

It was last held before that in 1997 where Parra beat Manly I think.
