Shane Flanagan overlooked for Parramatta Eels coaching job

CRONULLA assistant coach Shane Flanagan has been overlooked for an interview for the Parramatta coaching job with Daniel Anderson firming as favourite.

Flanagan nominated to replace Michael Hagan but it appears the contenders are Anderson and the club's two assistants, David Fairleigh and Matt Cameron.

Anderson arrived back in Australia on Tuesday after a successful four-year coaching stint with English Super League club St Helens.

Last night, Flanagan was resigned to the fact he had missed the top job at the Eels. "I think they've made up their mind to go with Anderson," he said.

"I'm disappointed that I didn't even get the chance to have a chat with them and for them to find out my thoughts. But they have made up their mind and there isn't much I can do. It's their decision."

Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald and club general manager Andrew Hill will interview Anderson next week.

"We will meet with Daniel after he finds his feet at home," Fitzgerald said. "In the meantime we will interview the internal candidates, Matt Cameron and David Fairleigh. After that we will make a recommendation to the board."

Fitzgerald scoffed at talk former Canterbury and Parramatta player Jim Dymock would be a candidate. He also rejected talk the race was now between Anderson and the Fairleigh-Cameron combination.

"I wouldn't say that but the situation hasn't changed," he said. "Daniel is favourite but the two assistant coaches also have good credentials."

Thanks for coming Shane.

I think we've made up our mind to go with Anderson too ;-). He's a class above what Flanagan could offer us at this point.

If he really wants to come on board at Parra, then there might be an assistant vacancy if one of them has a dummy spit when they don't get the job...

I'd say the club might simply have had a selection criteria of: first grade/top level coaching experience or current experience as an assistant coach at Parramatta. Flanagan comes nowhere near that as a a candidate... neither does Rip Taylor, Jim Dymock etc.

Kearney might have snuck it in claiming his NZ appointment was "top level" - until the team played like they did .

If the resume doesn't stack up against alternative applicants, is there any point in an interview ? I think not.

Maybe the Belly recommendation backfired ?

I dont understand why Flanagan has been turned away - but they haven't interviewed Anderson yet. What if they interview DA and don't like what they hear? Then Fairleigh will be our coach?

I know you guys seem to think it s a done deal and I hope you are right, but I am getting a little bit concerned.

lol..come on fp, time to start developing the gentle art of "reading between the lines" mate, surely you can't be as naive as to think that direct discussions have not taken place between St Helens and O'Connell street do you? ;-)

A funny thing happened last night at the footy, me and eelz47 walked up to DA (ha was at the game as Hellsy revealed) and he signed eelzy's 100 years of rugby league book, after being egged on by the gang to go up and asking him about the coaching job as a gee up, I decided to drum up the courage to ask him when he'll be starting??, he stood there and pissed himself laughing, I than asked him, don't tell me you haven't signed yet???...he continued to laugh, I than "welcomed him back to the clubl" and you guessed it...he continued to laugh shaking his head in the process.

it nice to see him find the funny side of it but it was also nice to see him not deny it either. :)

It certainly does sound like it's a done deal with Anderson. I think it would appear to be a formality from this point provided they can agree on a suitable remuneration for DA.

I also think that part of DA terms would be getting his brother back at the club. Which was a very low act by our club.

you can rest assured, they haven't f**ked this one up.

what happened to Gur, Aunty Kaye and Jonesy is just part and parcel of everyday life..it happened to me twice, it's happened to many people I know, you'll never ever avoid an economic downturn and company restructure are just part of lifes cycles but you can also argue that they could of prepared themselves a bit better.

Well, hello, when there are comments like preparing themselves better. The club was set up by DF and Ovo to underpin the NRL and Junior LEague form the foreseeable future, the poker machine tax was a bolt from the blue, there was no consultation from Carr and Egan, apart from a few tall tales that they could overcome it by increasing revenue.

The clubs have tried to get their grants excluded from the tax, as they believe they were set up to promote sport and assist the community, I don't think that anyone really can admit to seeing this. The clubs that did operate on a shoestring to some extent have benefitted as they are now on a moren even keel with the bigger and better resourced organisations.

Anyway , I would expect an announcement next week on the new coach, and like Stagger would be surprised if there was any surprise, no doubt we are setting up some sort pf press release etc.

IF something seems to go wrong with Daniel Anderson (god forbid) we will end up with someone like daisy or matt C. For me matt cameron over daisy anyday of the week.
We should not have ruled out flanno and publicly offended him

we've not publically offended him at all, it was Flanno who revealed it to Ritchie, we didn't go to the media with it...
