Sharks decline Morris contract extension following fall out with senior players
The Cronulla coach also tried to convince a star veteran to consider medical retirement.

Cronulla coach John Morris has reportedly lost the support from a number of senior players at the club following a number of difficult post-season conversations with underperforming key figures.

Veteran pairing Andrew Fifita and Matt Moylanhave both struggled to both find their best form and reach full fitness across the last two seasons, with Morris discussing the duo’s fragile future at the club and creating unrest within the camp.

upload_2020-11-23_16-19-59.gif
Morris’ management had requested a contract extension past the 2021 season, with the Sharks turning down the offer as they turn their focus to next season.

“I feel very sorry for John Morris because he was left with overpaid, underperforming players,” Rothfield said on The Big Sports Breakfast.

“I’m talking about Matt Moylan, Josh Duganand Andrew Fifita. He also lost Josh Morris this year and Bronson Xerri.

“Still in his two years at the club he has taken them into the top eight.

“But he is off contract next year, so his management have gone and asked for an extension and the Sharks have knocked it back.

“As I understand it they are going to wait 10 weeks into next season before making a decision and just see how the Sharks are travelling.

“I think this is a dangerous story when coaches futures are debated in the media as his will be it will have a very unsettling effect on the football team.”

Morris held tough conversations with Moylan and Fifita following the Sharks’ top-eight finish, with the pair’s season review interviews placing a rift between the playing group and their coach.

“There is all this talk about John Morris losing the sheds and the support of the senior players,” Rothfield said.

“I think this story is correct, but I applaud John Morris for the reason this has happened.

“What he did was he went to Matt Moylan and said if you can find another club go find one. And he read him out his performance review for the last two years and it has been ordinary.

“He also went to Andrew Fifita and said, you are struggling with your knee and you can’t keep your weight in order and you are struggling to train let alone play.

“Have you thought about medical retirement?

“And players don’t like being asked these tough questions or being told the truth.

Wade Graham is best mates with Moylan and it unsettles players and Aaron Woods is close to all these boys and this is the problem they get.

“But John Morris is doing his job. He’s right these boys needed to have the chat.”

Flanno is absolute Gentleman , I bumped into Shane in Caringbah working on hes Barge , I tried baiting to get info on what went on, the replies where as follows,
1.This club runs like an unorganized brothel, he said each club runs differently.
2. Where they a bunch of arsholes to you, nah he said, they just went a different way, they are good of bunch of people
and he also said they will struggle for a few years, I asked , is it the roster, nah he said, they are a young squad .
he would say a bad word, no wonder he has the support of the team he coached at the sharks.

I’m glad he’s gone to be honest. It didn’t sit right after all the crap he’s pulled over the years at the Sharks. All the drama queens are gone, now let’s focus on fresh outside voices/ideas and move forward in 2021

I bet the players would not like to hear the truths of their performances , nor for that matter that they are reaching the end of the line in regards to their worth to the team .

Let the mongrels whinge and whine all they like , after all it’s not a knitting club for old hens . Good on Morris or any coach for telling it like it is .

Upset big Woodsie!. Well done he might just leave an do the Sharks a favour
I hope his performances were also reviewed

And if Slothfield is telling close to the truth those players needed to hear it.
It was funny the media were only hinting that Morris has the support of all the senior players with supposed quotes to confirm all that from Townsend & Johnson, but did not have support at board level.
Obviously did not ask for all senior players opinions.
So which is it...or is the truth that only a couple of overpaid hacks were upset
And as players keep quoting "it is a business these days" etc
Same goes for the coach

Dont worry about Flanno..it is Paul Green they want
Well done Bomber you were honest and refreshing in your post match interviews
Dont worry if those players cant take the facts..probably best not trying to coach em, let it be someone else's problem

Good to see the scum falling apart at the same moment we are pulling together. Looks like a rebuild is needed down there followed by years down the bottom of the table.

Perhaps Dil Rothschild and his media mates may be able to help finance it ?

Well our own crop of powder puff players, have needed a proper talking too as well. Over paid over rated and showed little respect to the jersey or fans. It’s been like this for years now - I’m hoping a Coach rather than a ‘ mate and good bloke’ can turn this around. In relation to the Sharks, this is typical of many clubs were the players take control or think they have control.

Every see the peanut do anything like that? Well done Morris for telling them the painful truth and not pandering to them. We could have done with some of that from the board over the last 5 years.
Yes, it's bad enough non performers & past it players like Fefita, Dugan, Moylan & Woods taking up a Hugh chunk of their cap but for them to destabilize the rest of the players through coach bitching takes the cake. Morris has done a great job through all this but how ironical that his career will be on the line through these same players next year.Doesn't seem right to me.

As I said, we are just a waiting room for players and coaches to go on to bigger and better things. We are stuck with players like Norman and Hunt who, when all is said and done, couldn't give two hoots about the once mighty red v. Looking around it's hard to find many who actually do.

What is a Dragons fan to think? Ever since the premiership it has been a slow motion car crash of mass proportions. Some pretty woeful performances on the field completely overshadowed by the WORST management in NRL history. When this bleak period is eventually over, we will look back and wonder how our faith and loyalty even survived.

Shane Flanagan can do what he wants. He has zero connection to our club. Just a guy who used us a transfer lounge for grander personal pursuits.

I mean.. he debuted with St George, so by definition he does have some connection

Have faith, we’ll all be laughing about this in a years time

Looks like Mary will be a perfect fit at the Sharks. If players like to get picked on reputation and not performance, he is the man to boost morale. They will play like busted's but will still get picked because they are NRL standard.

If Rothfields comments are correct then Morris has stated the obvious and if players don't like it and carry on and the club actually supports that behaviour and not supports the coach for telling some truths, then he is better off leaving that club and resigning rather than waiting for them to sack him.

Imagine that, Sharks sacking their coach after making the 8 where as Saints need a few years of not making the 8 to get the coach sacked. If only Saints had high standards.

If Rothfields comments are correct.

A New Ltd article quoting Slothfield at the beginning of pre-season. Re-hashed by Crowley a few days ago parroting comments by some posters in your forum, the McInnes thread.

4 weeks out of Rnd 1 - All senior players notably Fifita and Woods looking as trim and as fit as they have in years. Moylan leading all stats in training. Not a peep at all from any senior players.

I know most of you don't want to hear about Sharks related subjects but we've had a pretty solid last few weeks of positive news. Morris situation is under the microscope, not that I agree with it but it's understandable in a certain aspect.

So here's a question: Do you think after Mary was livid about SF's appointment as his AC last year, he would suddenly be ok with being his AC at the Sharks?

Seems legit...
