Sharks to end conflict
By Peter Frilingos
October 10, 2003
THE long-term future of Sharks coach Chris Anderson could be known as early as today.
Sources last night indicated that Cronulla officials would meet with Anderson this afternoon.
It was unclear whether they would attempt to terminate his contract or give him a warning letter over the recent confrontations regarding the sacking of his son Jarrad.
Anderson has one year remaining and an option for a further two years if the club reaches the finals.
Should his contract be terminated Anderson and his management would then consider a damages claim against the club.
Chairman Barry Pierce refused to detail the situation yesterday.
"I'm not saying anything until after I have spoken to Chris and I will do that before the Kangaroo tour leaves," Pierce said.
It is understood Pierce will hold those talks with Anderson today and attempt to resolve the internal conflict that has hit the club.
Leading players yesterday stood behind Anderson. And the club could be forced to pay out more than $1million should he be sacked.
The coach has been at loggerheads with the club hierarchy at various times during the season.
The latest confrontation came last week when his son Jarrad had his contract terminated by club officials.
Anderson, who is meant to have sole responsibility for the hiring and firing of players, responded by sacking his assistants, Greg Pierce and Theo Burgess.
Pierce, the son of club chairman Barry, also lost his position as assistant coach on the Kangaroo tour.
