I'm confused about why we're celebrating signing Nicholls, an Intrust Premiership winning half who hasn't played first grade when we already had Shaun Nona, who was not only younger, but had won TWO Intrust Premierships. Nicholls is an excellent backup but we already had Nona.
I think nichols is seen more as a genuine 7 option whereas nona is probably more of a 6 we hoped could play 7

Would you like to buy a vowel?

LOVECHILD totally dominated Mc Fookwit's selections and thinking (aka stupidity) this year.
He was the greatest recruitment & selection bungle in years.
The NRL commentariat were baffled and bemused all year as to why Mary refused to replace him
He did a great con job on Mary, much like Wade did on cricket selectors for years

Mark Gasnier also echoed Mary's opinion of McCrone. I did not see what they both were on about. History as shown time and again that Mary just does not have what it takes to be a first grade head coach and Hornby and Young always needed a top grade head coach to learn from. Always bad decisions and bad calls. When are we going to fix this mess.

To make things worse, I'm tipping a family faction war if/when Mary is to be replaced. Despite the availability of some experienced coaches at the moment Hasler, Madge, JD and Henry - there is likely to be a war between the Millward and Young families for the head coach position. God help us please. We need a complete clean out of these self interested and self-enrichment people in our once great Club.

Why are we still discussing Shaun Nona?
He's gone, Nicholls is here so lets discuss him and what he brings to the table.
The thread shouldn't last too long and then we can talk about who would should be chasing.

I think this hits the nail on the head. I think the biggest issue we had was that we had too many players playing the same style as Gareth and none of them had organising skills to speak of. I think the 2 organising halves we had were Hutch and McCrone. Obviously Hutch got injured and although McCrone tried hard, just wasn't the complete player we required. Hence the purchase of Hunt and Nichols. I don't know what skill set Nichols has, but I am guessing he is an organising half that could possibly fill in for Hunt at a pinch.

As for 5/8, we have Widdop, Mann, Field and maybe a couple of others that would generally be considered a running 5/8 that would not need to organise and could just play their natural game.

Neither of them played for PNG. You're thinking of Luke Page.

Ah Luke Page, who could possibly forget him?

A YouTube "sensation" that had many salivating all because of a "highlights" package while playing for Mounties in reserve grade. Then, in his one and only game for the Dragons, Page 'impressed' with a meagre two hit ups and about the same amount of tackles.

Was he one of P. Mullholland's astute acquisitions? I swear that bloke was the worst appointment for the club*.

*Paul McGregor excluded.

I do too. For the life of me I can't understand why he never got a run last year. As you say, best of luck to him...
McGregor had umpteen opportunities to try Nona.
Slick half and a gun goal kicker to boot.
Given that Demetriou had earmarked him as a player of potential - ensured that he was never going to get a crack at FG.
What a dumb, egotistical way to run a football team...

Both Milford and Nikorima would have to lose limbs before Nona plays first grade at Brisbane.

He's come from the Cowboys feeder club under JD without first grade experience. He then signed with Melbourne Storm for a year who were happy to let him go to Mackay Cutters - without first grade experience. He then signed with the Dragons after not even training with the Mackay Cutters.

He's approaching 28 - without any first grade experience in 3 clubs and now apparently going to the Broncos feeder club. I don't care what JD thinks, the guy can't be first grade quality if the 2 clubs before us weren't willing to take a punt on him.

Mate good point , but those clubs had established 7s so may have been a bit harder for him . Everything you say here I tend to agree with you , but for crying out loud he should have been given ago by Mary as we were screaming out for a half , it may have help us get to the 8...

Agree. And you can say the same of Nicholls.

I haven't seen Nicholls play so can't really comment. As I've said in other posts, I think the reason he didn't get a go at the Dragons was because putting both him and Widdop in the team together left a hole in the organisation of the team. I think we all agree that Gareth isn't an organiser, and from what I saw of Nona he wasn't either. They both play a similar game - running halves who need to leave the organisation to the other half.

I would imagine we signed Nicholls because he, like Hunt, organises the team and leaves the other half to play a running game.

Like I said, can't really comment cause I haven't seen him play. If he isn't then you are right, there was no point in signing him.
