YOUNG GUNS GIVEN A CHANCE IN FIRST TRIAL
By Wayne Cousins

Tuesday, 9 February 2010
Wests Tigers will field a team full of rising young talent and new signings for its first trial of 2010 on Friday, February 12.
The first trial will be played against the North Queensland Cowboys at Tiger Park, Walkerston (near Mackay) at 8pm (Qld time).
Coach Tim Sheens has rested several of his regular first graders for the game.
Jake Mullaney, Jake Clarke, Jay Florimo, Jason Schirnack, Rhys Curran, Andrew Fifita and Chris Corby have been rewarded for their fine performances over summer and for the Wests Tigers U20s team in 2009 with selection in the team.
New signings Geoff Daniela, Junior Moors, Englishman Mark Flanagan, and Arana Taumata will step out for the first time in Wests Tigers colours.
Daniel Fitzhenry will pull on the Wests Tigers jersey once more after spending the past few seasons in the English Super League. This time around, the 2005 premiership winning winger will wear the nine jersey, a number he wore whilst playing hooker at times for Hull KR.
One player hoping for a change of luck will be Blake Lazarus, who has missed the past two seasons following knee reconstructions. He has been selected at half-back where he will partner Florimo in a young halves combination.
“The coaching staff is looking forward to seeing how the NYC players from last year can make the transition to the top grade,’’ said Wests Tigers Football Manager Alan Mair.
“We are also interested in seeing how our new recruits go. The players have been training hard and are looking forward to getting out on the field.
“There are a number of players fighting for spots in the team to play the Sydney Roosters in the Foundation Cup on February 21.”
Former Wests Tigers full-back Shannon Gallant will line up against his old club in his first appearance for the Cowboys.

Where did you think Fitzy would play? He'll be a number 14 - very simple.
The only thing simple was the decision to bring him back from England, talk about 2 steps forward,1 step back.:x

no mitch brown, lui and simon dwyer has me thinking they are certs for round 1.

that probably means we have one or two bench spots available for forwards, especially if cayless isn't fit.

other points:

* gibbs has been named so it serves as his suspension
* apparently josh davis is one of sheens latest position changes and has been training as a backrower

I would be surprised if Dwyer and Brown were certain for round 1...however I am under the impression that Lui is going to be the number 7.

very light weight team- very little experience. Not even really sure what knowledge Teflon is trying to gain of player options with that lot. I hope Flanagan & Lazarus go well.

No doubt a lot of the main squad will pick themselves and Sheens has indicated his thinking for the starting backline but where does this group get us?

Probable starting line up Rd 1 (taking into account all known remarks from Teflon & co):

Moltzen (fullback)
Ryan (wing)
Ayshford (centre)
Lawrence (centre)
??? (wing)
Marshall (fiveeigth)
Lui (half)
??? (lock)
Ellis (second row)
Heighington (second row)
Gibbs (prop)
Farah (hooker)
Galloway (prop)

Interchange
Cayless (prop)
Fitzhenry (utility)
Payten (prop & backrow)
???

I'm not sure this first trial team does anything to answer the questions. Unless there is some injury concerns why arent the likes of Tupou & Fulton etc being tested?

I would not read too much into, we do not know who may have a few niggling little injuries and so on.

I do not see out team changing too much from last year in positions 2,3,4 and 6, but Cayless and Moors will come in to the pack to add extra grunt.

1/5/7 remain contentious positions at the moment. 5 only because of TT's unknown fitness status.

I guess Taumata is no chance of playing FG anytime soon if he can't make the starting line-up of a reserve side.

Pretty sure that his suspension will stand. Im sure he has been suspended for 3 NRL matches, which means he will not be eligable for rd 1

Trials dont count, because they are not designated NRL sanctioned matches for competition points

Pretty sure trials do count. There was a kerfuffle a while back. Which is why he's been named. And obviously... won't play.

I'd imagine they, like other unnamed players, will get a run in the other trial matches, just like last year when Moltzen, Gallant and McDonnell each got a crack at the fullback's position.

Yeah our side is pretty young as well. John Williams is probably the only one in that team who's guaranteed to make the first grade side come round 1.

Our team is either youngsters, new signings or underperforming first graders like Kaufusi and Manuokafoa.

On a side note, it'll be interesting to see how Fitzy handles playing hooker. I know the utility role is probably the best way to use him, but unless there's an injury in the backline I saw him as a bench spot wasted.

If he can play hooker then at least you'll still be able to use him apart from covering injuries. Maybe Fulton or Ayshford would be a better pick. Could play lock or centres, so some utility value without wasting bench spots.

Hey - no mention of Laz at half.

Has he played there before?

All this Moltzen at fullback crap. Maybe Sheens sees Laz as a potential 7?

Ive never seen the kid play, so any thoughts are helpful.

Thanks.

Tigers too good for Cowboys

  • Wests Tigers 28 North Queensland 4
THE Wests Tigers last night kicked off their 2010 season with a convincing 28-4 win over North Queensland at Mackay in a match played in muddy conditions.

The Cowboys actually opened the scoring in the 39th minute through a try to Manase Manuokafoa. However the Tigers soon took control hitting back with three converted tries in the opening nine minutes of the second half.

Fullback Jake Mullaney opened their account following good lead-up work from prop Junior Moors, who scored himself in the 47th minute.

English recuit Mark Flanagan capitalised on creative work from hooker Chris Corby to score. And he scored again shortly after collecting a kick from halfback Blake Lazarus.

The Tigers' second-half scoring spree was completed in the 78th minute by Josh Davis.

Tigers prop Bryce Gibbs played strongly in the trying condition
Wests Tigers 28 (M Flanagan 2, J Mullaney, J Moors, J Davis tries; Mullaney 4 goals) North Queensland 4 (M Manuokafoa).

Just a trial, but a wins a win all the same. Hopefully Sheens has a bit better of an idea of the makeup of the team. The Foundation cup next weekend should give us a bit better of an idea.
