I was scrolling around in the on-demand section on Foxtel yesterday and I came across a round-table discussion type show on the 2005 winning Tigers side hosted by Laurie Daley. I believe it was filmed just after our Grand Final win and it featured John Skandalis, Brett Hodgson, Benji Marshall, Scott Prince, Royce Simmons and Tim Sheens. I feel a lot of what they spoke about hasn't really changed in the last 16 years. I doubt that Sheens is going to be the messiah in turning our fortunes around, but we have a heap of work to do in a short space of time. If the last 16 years hasn't been hard enough, I think the 3 or 4 might be even harder.
Anyway, here is a brief of summary of the show:
The very first question Daley asked Sheens' was, why did he go to the Tigers when they were a rabble. His response was that he needed a job and that they offered it to him. He shared no insight to a vision in trying to turn the club around or anything like that. All he elaborated on was the fact that each year some clubs see success as winning the comp, some see it as making the 8, some see it as improving on last year and the rest want to avoid running last
Prince admitted that the only reason he came to the club was because of Sheens and the connection they shared at the Cowboys
Sheens spoke of the club as an undesirable place for players to play at and said his money was being spent on players in flegg and trying to keep them at the club. He spoke very highly of the group Farah and Bronson Harrison were in at Balmain and the talent over in the Western Suburbs juniors as well
Sheens said Marshall was in our system before he got to the Tigers
As we all know, Sheens spoke on the fact that attack was the only game plan we had. A minimum of 25 points had to be scored a game as the coaching staff saw that as the only way we could win games. Simmons and Prince spoke about desire in defence and especially defending their mistakes. (Something that surprised me and I haven't bothered to check is that Royce said in 2004 we had the 4th best defensive record in the comp but we couldn't score points)
The goal in 2005 was to make 7th or 8th but they secretly believed they could make the top 4 the further the season went along. They did say that the only player in the whole entire group who spoke openly to the rest of the club about making the top 4 was Ben Galea
