Shoaib accused of ball-tampering again
20 May 2003

Pakistan's fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar faces a possible ban if he is found guilty of ball-tampering during the sixth match of the Bank Alfalah Cup in Sri Lanka. Shoaib was hauled before the match referee, Gundappa Viswanath, on Tuesday night after television footage during Pakistan's 22-run win over New Zealand at Dambulla today suggested that he was trying to alter the condition of the ball.

Viswanath requested TV evidence after the match, and held an hourlong hearing with the match umpires Daryl Harper (Australia) and Peter Manuel (Sri Lanka) as well as the Pakistan team management. "The umpires advised me to view television clippings, believing that the condition of the ball may have been changed," said Viswanath. "I will make my decision tomorrow." That decision is expected at 1230 local time (0630 GMT) tomorrow.

The incident was brought to the attention of the third umpire, Gamini Silva, after the TV broadcaster showed close-up shots of Shoaib apparently scratching the quarter-seam of the ball. If found guilty of breaking Law 42.3, which refers to changing the condition of the match ball, he will be face a minimum four-match ban, as this would be his second offence inside the last 12 months.

This allegation is another controversial incident in Shoaib's career. As well as having endured scrutiny on his bowling action since the start of his international playing days, he recently faced a one-match suspension during Pakistan's tour of Zimbabwe before the World Cup for throwing a plastic bottle at spectators during a match.

Spin bowler Daniel Vettori has extra reason to celebrate after the Black Caps historic tri-series victory in Sri Lanka.

New Zealand beat Pakistan by four wickets in the final, and afterwards Vettori was named man of the series and presented with a new car.

Vettori says it is great to have contributed to their first ever tri-series win, which shows they have turned a corner.

Captain Stephen Fleming top scored with 65 on Friday night, laying the foundations for New Zealand's successful run chase after Pakistan had made 198.

The Black Caps have won the tri-series.

New Zealand has beaten Pakistan by four wickets in the final of the Sri Lankan tournament in Dambulla.

Chasing Pakistan's 198 all out, New Zealand reached the target in the 46th over.

Captain Stephen Fleming played a match winning innings, top scoring with 65, while the Pakistani bowlers contributed with a remarkable 44 extras, including 25 wides.

New Zealand's run chase looked shaky after Fleming and Scott Styris were dismissed in the same over to leave the score at 152 for four, but the middle and lower order got New Zealand home.

Brendon McCullum had the honour of hitting the winning runs.

It is New Zealand's first one-day tournament victory since the ICC Knockout Tournament in Kenya in 2000.

For me the impressive thing is that we went on to winning the thing even after losing Bond. I really thought we'd fall in a heap after he went because other than Daniel Vettori the rest of the bowling attack is very average.
They did the job and well done.

It was a joke he only got a crap penalty seeing he was caught doing it to two different balls.
The ICC have given 1 match suspensions for players having a bit of a dummy spit and Shoaib cops bugger all for what I'd think would be called cheating. Not good enough.

I don't know what Nasser is doing Tony, you're the cricketing expert. I heard he had a bit of a run in with Mike Gatting the other week. I think Gatt's had fired a shot accross Nassers nostrils.

The Barmy Army would make a difference to most countries, but it's England we're talking about.

The tournament that decided the 1-day champs finished months ago. What are they still doing in South Africa?
