Should Parra release Lyon

I read over the weekend that Lyon will be asking for a release from Parra so he can play for Wee Waa for the remainder of the season. If I was Fitzy I'd knock it on the head right away. If Lyon chooses to walk away from Parra, then he should sit out the remainder of his contracted period.

If released, what's to stop Lyon from signing with a team like the Roosters should he suddenly feel the urge to play again and Parra have spent his contract money on other players?

Fitzy needs to stand firm and give an emphatic no to Lyon.

Very simply if Lyon doesnt want to play NRL any more then I would grant him a Conditional Release to play with whatever Country Rugby League team he sees fit. The Conditional part would be that if he ever chooses to return to the NRL that he must fulfill his present contract with Parramatta and that at the conclusion of that contract Parramatta would have first and last option on resigning him to a new contract if he wished to return to the game after that.

With this approach you will soon find out if he really wants out of the NRL or whether he just wants out of Parramatta.

I am pretty sure from what I have heard that he simply just wants out of Professional Football all together so I wouldnt expect him to care about the Conditions of any release. You might find that he might even come back next year after having a year off.

Plus, if we release him now he can still play for Country First and it wouldnt surprise me if he was picked for Country Origin even though he is no longer playing in the NRL.

HIt it on the head Chipmunk.

If he wants to run around and play for wee waa, fine.....but if he ever gets the itch for nrl back, then he must fullfill the remainder of his parramatta contract

i agree with you if he does want to come back he should only come back to parra but how will we fit him in the cap if he does decide to come back in 2006 and we have a full cap?? is there exemptions i doubt it though...

Chipmunk that is exactly how it should be .. But we shouldnt stand in his way.
If we dont give him the release he may then come back and play for the rooters.

What will happen is this

Lyon gets granted a c onditional release as stated. Parra will be forced to pay some money to the cap to keep the contract valid but this could be worked on as being a small amount in cap terms say 50,000-60,000 or so

Parra can then use the remaining 200,000 to buy another player or upgrade contracts of exsisting players.

It's been done before

in 2003 Parramatta were actually paying Michael Buttner somethime like $150,000 as they gave hi ma release fro mthe final year of his deal to play with the Tigers.

In contrasts Solomona was released by the Eels from the final year of his deal to sign with WAkefield by the Wildcats have payed his entire contract.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

No release for Lyon. He has to realise that if he is going to walk away from the club so easily he cannot be expected to have everything his own way. Fitzgerald signed with the expectation that he would fulfil his contract and therefore if he's not going to honour it then there should be no special allowances made for him.

I agree. Players have to learn that signing contracts isn't like signing autographs.

What if it is the other way around ?

Jamie has a year off, gets fat and way out of form - can he rock up to Parra and demand that he still has a contract to play footy with us and get paid the $$$$$

Does Parra have to take him back ?

Not sure interesting question though

depends on his conmtract - Parramatta could release him but they would need to pay him out.

unless there are clauses in his contract allowing Parra to get rid of him

or Smith could just play him in reggies untill he gets into shape

IN saying that I can't see it happening tho

I would think the issue would be sorted by then. I don't think Fitzy and the Parramatta board would be keeping Jamie's contract alive if he wasn't planning on coming back this year, they would need to know his status beforehand so they can spend the money on other players for next yr. I'm sure there would also be part of Jamie's contract stating that he turn up to training and keep a high level of fitness. He would probably be breaching his contract if he turned up fat and unfit.

Once his release was settled I would think if Jamie returned next year or later, it would be on an incentive based deal.
