Should the Reds be in Toyota Cup?

Would it be a better stepping stone to a franchise if the WA Reds were included in the Toyota Cup rather than the JB and eventually Queensland Cup? Would get the Reds name into the NRL psychey and be at a much higher standard for our best players to be playing at.

Great question. Thats something outside the square for me. Not really sure but i think right now WA would struggle to have the players to match it with the Toyota Cup teams. So for me i think PL then QC then Toyota Cup (if they can provide players that have the ability to match it with the east coast teams).

If they did have a team without a first grade team, they'd have to have some agreement that the other teams can sign the players and advance them into first grade when needed. Cause the idea of Toyota Cup is to prepare them for first grade teams.

Interested in hearing other ideas, cause this might have some merit to it.

It's one of those things damed if you do or don't simply because of the standard for the Toyota Cup.

Perhaps once the Reds are up and running they might be able to be included in this fold of the game

Agreed I think I would skip the Q'land cup and play 2/3 years in JB and two in Toyota then hopefully a franchise and we will have our juniors in Toyota anyway.

I was amazed at how many WA jnrs are playing over East (somewhere around 70) in various comps and when you look at the handful that are coming through into NRL 1st grade a strong development framework will benefit the whole of the NRL as well as WARL.

I think they should. I remember reading that Matt Peterson said when the Reds were axed from the the comp their u19's team won the minor or major premiership with a team made up of entirely local juniors. Would provide a great pathway to the NRL for juniors and the Reds, at the same time help to improve the local league

Are you sure?

1997 - The winners in all grades were:

* First Grade: Brisbane Broncos
* Reserve Grade: Canterbury Bulldogs
* Under-19s: Penrith Panthers
* Under-17s: Brisbane Broncos

I don't know where to find a full season review so they might've topped the h&a table but they didn't win anything.

Didnt know there were that many WA players in league. And if Hindyscrack is right about the local juniors getting the minor/maj premiership then you can see that with some effort you can attract local juniors to the sport (unlike melb so far. 10 years and going strong. pfft, lets see some locals make it to first grade).

I now agree with your idea. Skip QC, get juniors playing and then getting contracts with the other teams. Its not like Gold Coast recruited only Gold Coast bread players, they got a few Gold Coast players and then recruited players based on skill and compatability with the team regardless on where they grew up.

So therefore no need to hold onto WA players omce they reach 20 by having a QC team. Locals can get behind the local u/20 team and then when they keep losing players to other teams there will be a motivational factor to get a local team into the NRL. Look at QLD, always had players being bought by Syd clubs. So they started demanding a QLD team so that they didnt have to loose their locals to Syd. Look what they got... the most successfull footy team over the last 2 decades!

Thinking about it you have to think that having a team in QC will allow any players (u/20) that didnt get a contract with the other teams to continue playing rather than just having to retire from league or move to another state to play in 2nd division. It depends on the cost to WARL in having two teams in comps. If its not cost effective the only negative of not having a 2nd division team is that when your in your first year of NRL you may not have much quality depth in the playing ranks.

Forget about premier league. Queensland cup would have a greater level of skill than the new premier league and you really need players advancing their skill level in preparation for a local NRL team.

I think give them 2-3 years in JBC and put them in Toyota Cup..maybe put Wellington in there aswell.

I don't think that they would be allowed to compete because one of the reasons for the competition was to just have the 16 NRL teams so that the Toyota Cup games could be played as a curtain raiser to the NRL games. If the Reds were admitted to the Toyota Cup then this would stuff up the draw.

I think the most realistic goal for the Reds would be to joing the NSWRL Junior Rep competitions and play in the SG Ball Under-18s and Harold Matthews Under-16s. Obviously it is a big concern to have school boys flying across Australia however it is a 9 week competition (+ finals) at the start of the year so i don't think that it would interfere with school to much. Plus looking at some of those teams that played Under-17s they were from all parts of Australia and Perth did play in that as well.

The best Under-18s could then step up to Jim Beam Cup.
