Shoulder Pads

I suspect because they forced people to wear loose fitting jerseys to accomodate them which gave the opposition something to grab
Jerseys are skin tight now so no way to get it on over shoulders pads

They're redundant now due to chest contact being the main way people tackle these days.

I'm sure you could trace it back and blame the Storm somehow. Legs tackles were phased out after teams discovered controlling the play the ball won games.

Also it's a bit of a pussy thing to wear. I'd never have played in them.

I must be a pussy too
I wore them throughout juniors
Maybe if they were still worn there could be less shoulder injuries (can't guarantee it and don't have proof or source just saying maybe)

Feel free to let Norm Provan know he was a "pussy"

He was able to pull it off.

As a rule, it's a bit of a soft thing. You'd never see me wearing them, and I hit harder than anyone. All comes down to what is comfortable though I guess.

I hated wearing them back in the day. I wish I played in these days. What I hate the most is grabbing and ripping shorts. I like to freeball and hated wearing cossies or undies under my shorts but I had too.

I definitely would never free ball. I'm quite well catered for at the best of times. Just a bit of tape around my wrists (white with a thin black strip) and some deep heat on the pistons and I was away

The shoulder pads these days are a nylon type shirt with a bit of padding in the shoulders and chest only about half inch thick the kids like wearing them all very slim fitting not like the old vinyl two inch thick padding held together with leather straps and elastic and adjustable buckles

Shoulder pads (to me at least) are synonymous with Clinton Mohr in the late 80s. Can anyone else remember him dropping kicks regularly because his got in the way?

They were too big for him.

Old school tackling has been superseded by wrestling & I haven't seen a wrestler wear shoulder pads! Maybe our footballers can wear those same long baggy silk shorts and tag team when they are interchanged.
