Seven considers Sunday twilight games
Damian Barrett
23mar05

CHANNEL 7 is considering requesting the AFL to return to Sunday twilight matches in the next TV rights agreement.

Under the proposal the network would run its news bulletin at halftime of the broadcast, in the hope the second half would boost figures on a key-ratings evening.
Seven's intentions with Sunday would be to run consecutive matches, with a program finish time about 8pm.

In its recently struck alliance with Channel 10, Seven is to have exclusive rights on Sundays (two matches) and Fridays (one).

Ten is hoping to run three matches consecutively on Saturdays in a plan that is being dubbed Super Saturday.

The proposals – which leave just two matches for pay-TV – are yet to be endorsed by the AFL. Its preferred broadcast structure will not be settled for many weeks.

The AFL is determining the length of the next rights agreement, which will begin in 2007.

As revealed in yesterday's Herald Sun, it is seriously considering reducing the length of the deal from the initially mooted five years, even to as few as two.

Fox Footy broadcasts three lowly games a weekend in the current rights agreement.

It has stated if it is to invest the same money (about $30m a year) in the next arrangement it would be seeking either four matches or better quality ones.

The pay-TV situation has also become clouded following revelations in this paper the AFL was considering owning or buying into a station.

The AFL is going to have SIX matches on free-to-air television all around Australia while in rugby league heartland all we get is a pitiful TWO and NONE in VIC, SA and WA. This is beyond a joke - get off your arse David Gallop and do something before its too late.

Hopefully they make their own pay tv station which goes belly up and makes the AFL broke. Oh how I would laugh....

meh... I've tried watching AFL before, because there are so many games on tv. It would be pretty good if you could get into it.. But I dunno, the game just sucks..

I can stand watching Union...but not Afl..

Thats a catchy name. Can anyone think of any other sports that have 'Super Saturdays'?

The joke is that the NRL continues to accept second best when we all know that our product is the greatest game of all...

David Gallop shows passion for the game- more passion than the people who started Superleague that's for sure. I do agree, however, our current TV deal blows! :x

Absolute garbage.

You guys are running off gallop, when your decisions are emotion and nothing else.

This isn't the 'goold old days' of 1984 when playing in front of 6,000 was acceptable and the players had full time jobs outside of the game.

The game is a business now, and it has to be run as a business. Gallop does a fantastic part in that regard. Tri-nations 2006 is a perfect example of the input he is putting into the game Australia wide.

I agree.

Get the Gold Coast in ASAP. Then in the next TV deals allow for extra money that would be used to start a Perth and Wellington side.

Not only would that give more games, but it would expand the Leagues international market and make it a better product for sponsors.

The ideal competition would have 21 teams with every team playing eachother once. That would cut back on games.....which I think it needed at club level.

You guys are blaming Gallop.

He didn't put pen-to-paper on a shit deal for the last round of FTA rights, that was your ARL buddies. David Gallop is the best administrator we've had in my opinion and a very smart campaigner. He is negotiating for a much much better FTA rights arrangement for the best of the game and its supporters.

So just relax and wait and see.

Like he said!!!!

Gallop is easily, EASILY, the besty administrator we've had! He's savvy and tends to make the right choices.

He's not about to rush into anything which piuts the game in trouble, and he's not about to sit back and watch the TV rights remain as they are! They'll be back up for grabs soon enough - and we'll see how it works out!

You cant blame Gallop for the current FTA deal. He wasn't the one that put pen to paper, plus it was just after SL & the NRL had to take what it could get. Gallop will go into the FTA bargaining with a very good hand & Packer knows that & wont bluff. Last year 5/10 (I think it was 5) highest rating shows were league, Packer will pay a very reasonable price plus he should be willing to show games on Saturday because they will out rate everything else, who wants to watch a movie you saw for the first time 2 years ago even though its a debut on FTA, not me thats fo sho!
