Slide Defense? - What the?

It keeps getting said that Parra still employ a slide defense....but I've gotta say I think the team isn't actually doing it at all.

I may be wrong (I don't consider myself a tactical genius), but I think the so called experts are getting poor goalline defense mixed up with a slide defense....our goalline defense sucks - plain and simple...small guys often exploit the lack of sideways mobility of our forwards....3 times yesterday Brisy scored soft tries from small guys darting over from dummy half....I don't believe this is from a slide defense - yes, its from the defense not coming off the line, but no one is sliding - just getting stepped.

Also, MANY times yesterday our outside players came up on the Broncos quickly to try to cut off their ball movement outside....this sure as hell isn't a sliding defense - its an up and in....everyone is saying the Broncos didn't execute well yesterday - well maybe we applied a little pressure and thats a contributing factor to why they didn't get things right.

I agree we haven't mastered the suffocating defense employed by so many teams these days....but I am sure thats what we are working towards.....you don't just become experts overnight when you have had it hammered into your head all your career to do it otherwise....the Roosters weren't experts at smothering teams overnight.

Spot on mate. But don't tell anyone.

The line rushes up now, we got pinged for going too early a couple of times yesterday, but that will improve. Our 3-ins and centres are coming up even quicker which showed yesterday, with Lockyer having to turn back inside several times.

It wasn't perfect, but it improved 110% on last week and at this rate will be water tight with in weeks.

Yeah it's more of a rush in and then slide if needed. Basically more trying to combine the two then run with either type. Good thing is this gets you in their faces quick, but bad thing is it leaves less time to make critical errors. You need to make sure you force the opposition into a bad move so that it is easier to compensate, because if they know what they are doing and pull it off you don't have a wealth of time to cover what they wanna do.

But their three tries yesterday were from poor marker defense. The players to each side of the markers were moving, but the markers themselves weren't, and thus gaps were created allowing Berrigan to crash over and Tony to step back inside and under.

Typical crap Channel 9 commentary though blamed Burt for the Berrigan try when it was obvious that if Wagon had have moved to his right then he would have covered the little hooker.........

Parra's markers have been notorious in the last couple of seasons of not "staying alive." The second marker should be moving in the direction of the ball and the first is supposed to take the "lazy" (guy who played the ball) in case of a switch at the ruck. It doesn't seem to happen as well as it used and is probably more the reason these tried are being scored as there is a lack of pressure from one marker and no involvement from the other. Wagon's effort yesterday was a classic example.

Better to have problems in one area, than all over the park though. Easier to rectify.

I watched the tape back, and focused soley on watching our defence.

I really like it, and can see how we are improving and adjusting.

A concern though is, that as you rush up, you can create a gap behind you leaving you suceptable to short kicks as the players have to turn and chaneg the way of their momentum. Brisbane went close twice yesterday, but luck was on our side.

that's why when you rush up close to the centre of the field the winger needs to hold back in case of the kicking. this leaves a staggered line and the ability to spread it wide and make some metres, which means the centre needs to be ready to also rush and cover any decisions by the opposition to make use of the original shooter by throwing theball wide.
