Slightly Worrying - Mumps Scare

As you've all probably heard, Sonny Bill Williams and Willie Tonga both contracted the mumps from Reni Maitua and then played against the Sharks. While it shouldn't be too much of a problem due to Australia's immunisation system immunising against mumps at 15 years of age, it is a slight worry and another bad situation for the NRL.

Hopefully none of our guys will be affected by it, but New Zealand's immunisation policy is very different to ours (though I don't know much about it) and as a result, some of our Kiwi blokes could be in a bit of trouble. Maiava, Vagana and Stosic would have been living in NZ around their teen years and are probably at a higher risk than the other guys in the team.

It's possible that the differences in immunisation systems in NZ to Aus are the reasons for Maitua and SBW to have contracted the illness.

Lets hope our boys aren't affected by it.

Mumps is not a nice thing to have.

It was reported that Maitua rang SBW to see how he was feeling and Sonny Bill hung up on him. Good to see the team united in a crisis.

Being old enough to pre-date mumps immunisation in Oz, I remember getting them when I was 7-8 years old. Of course at that age, they don't have quite the same effect as on someone with already dropped nuts. Still had my big fat head wrapped up in a tea-towel to stop the ache in my neck glands and was in some serious discomfort for a few days. Funniest part was my significantly older brother who used to regularly beat me up in a kind of friendly older sibling way gave me grief and kept tightening the tea towel in the mistaken belief that mumps was a kid disease. Oh how I laughed the next week when he was layed up in bed and no tea towel could fix where he was hurting!!!

My understanding is that it's bloody contagious, so Vags and other Kiwis who may have missed immunisation could be in serious trouble.

Apparently Brad Clyde brought it into the camp, you only have to look at how quickly the others caught it to see how contagious it is.

SBW should be hammering Clyde, not Maitua...

Given the speed of the spread of the diseease through the Doggies ranks it must be an STD. Guess that's what you get when you share the same Willie (Get it?) hehehe..

Here's a snippet from a web article I found this morning:

The Bulldogs are still awaiting the results of tests on their squad for mumps, although it appears almost certain Williams and Willie Tonga are suffering from the infection.

Cronulla, who beat the Bulldogs on Sunday, completed blood tests on 18 players - the 17 who played against the `Dogs plus young forward Keith Galloway - on Tuesday.

Galloway had dinner with friend Williams recently and the club decided to take a safety first approach.

The tests came back negative with no signs of mumps.

Five players, however, require immunisation against the viral infection.

Glad we're being proactive!

Maitua was born in Sydney and grew up in Maroubra. I think it was just bad luck that he got it.

Thats right. He is half Samoan and half aussie so i dont think that has anything to with it. Whilst on the topic of Maitua we should try sign his younger brother Lyden who is currently playing for Souths PL. Tough little nugget who many thought would go better then his older brother. Plays hooker/lock and tackles his heart out. Only 20 with HUGE potential.
