I've had a look at the facts surrounding the tv rights situation and Gallop is on the money.
Russell Crowe is all flash and no substance with his tv rights comments. He just wants to drum up support with simple-minded league supporters like some people in this forum.
So, put your passion aside and look at the real issues. The main sticking point is the amount of viewers who follow league and afl across the country. The facts are

*AFL is accepted in more states than League. This also creates more potential viewers for pay-tv across Australia and more sponsorship dollars (as more people will be seeing the advertisments).

* AFL simply attracts bigger crowds (over 55000 for two mid-table teams in Carlton and St Kilda tonight).

At the moment, league simply cannot command the same amount for tv rights as afl. League is an east coast game, afl is australia-wide. No organisation on Earth would give rugby league more money than afl to promote their product. It is simple economics. Afl has a larger market.

Of course, Gallop should do more to promote the greatest game of all. But, his hands are certainly tied when it comes to bidding rights.

GCR, you are a prime example of a fool. You cannot articulate a sentence, never mind an argument.

I don't think the 7,000 or so in both Sydney and Brisbane who watch the Friday night AFL game could make it be considered "Australia wide".

I don't think anyone is honestly arguing for a better deal for the AFL, but a BETTER deal for league. There are number of issues that people have a problem with - the largest being the lack of competition in the rights. Nine and Fox have no competition, unlike in the AFL where seven and ten really pushed for it.

Whilst it is illogical to compare the AFL and NRL in terms of national coverage, AFL are getting more money for their value than the NRL - where we are getting paid unders.

Do the populations of WA and SA combined even match that of NSW? I was under the impression that more PEOPLE would be worth something, not more LOCATIONS.

WTF do crowds have to do with TV ratings?

Try again David.

Rugby League is pay tv's highest rating program by miles , even the Toyota Cup rates strongly , bringing up the crowd figures that attend the games is pretty stupid considering that we're talking about TV rights and as has already been mentioned in this thread - the AFL in Sydney and Brisbane on most occasions is flat out hitting 100 000 viewers .

In the end the NRL is half owned by News Ltd and PBL (whatever they're called these days) so it's very doubtful that League will ever get a fair deal as the TV rights will always go to it's 50% owners and not at a premium price in any case .
