I've had a look at the facts surrounding the tv rights situation and Gallop is on the money.
Russell Crowe is all flash and no substance with his tv rights comments. He just wants to drum up support with simple-minded league supporters like some people in this forum.
So, put your passion aside and look at the real issues. The main sticking point is the amount of viewers who follow league and afl across the country. The facts are
*AFL is accepted in more states than League. This also creates more potential viewers for pay-tv across Australia and more sponsorship dollars (as more people will be seeing the advertisments).
* AFL simply attracts bigger crowds (over 55000 for two mid-table teams in Carlton and St Kilda tonight).
At the moment, league simply cannot command the same amount for tv rights as afl. League is an east coast game, afl is australia-wide. No organisation on Earth would give rugby league more money than afl to promote their product. It is simple economics. Afl has a larger market.
Of course, Gallop should do more to promote the greatest game of all. But, his hands are certainly tied when it comes to bidding rights.
