Smells like more than a feeling

Hi All

I am currently reading a book entitled what the dog saw by an author named malcom gladwell.

In it he talks about sampling music and how throughout history there is a lot of examples of artists borrowing from others work. An example he gives is the guitar riff from nirvana's smells like teen spirit being pretty close to boston's more than a feeling.

At first i thought that was crazy but the more I listened to the two songs the more apparent it became. Can others hear the similarity ?

They knew it themselves - on the Live At Reading DVD Dave Grohl starts singing 'More Than A Feeling' over the top of the riff at the start of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

The theme music for Futurama sounds similar too.

On a side note, in the middle section of Pink Floyd's One Of These Days there is quite a resemblance to the theme music from Doctor Who, they even used to replace the middle 8 with the Dr Who music when playing live.

Never mind 'Teen Spirit', what about Holy Grail?

When I first heard Teen Spirit I thought the riff was a rip off of Wild Thing. Then when I heard Holy Grail I thought it was an embarrassment to Australian music as it is a clear rip off.

And yeah, you can hear more than a feeling in there too.


The new Kiss record has a song called Modern Day Delilah, have a listen on You Tube and tell me the riff isnt taken from Pearl Jam - Even Flow.

When music has been commercial for this long, you're going to get riffs that sound similar either intentionally or unintentionally.

There's similarities between all three songs and you could argue Hunters and Collectors also ripped off Boston.
