"Kimmorley to get nod to lead Blues
By Brad Walter
March 30, 2004

Sharks halfback Brett Kimmorley will take his first step towards replacing the injured Andrew Johns as NSW captain when he is named in a preliminary Test squad this week.

While injuries and form may force changes to the Australia side to play New Zealand in Johns's home town of Newcastle on April 23, selectors will meet on Thursday to nominate 25 players to be fitted out for team uniforms and training gear.

Kimmorley is the incumbent Test halfback after a neck injury ruled Johns out of last year's Kangaroos tour, and national selector Bob McCarthy confirmed he was likely to retain the job against the Kiwis.

If fit, he would then be almost certain to be the Blues' first-choice halfback in the State of Origin series and become favourite for the NSW captaincy.

With last season's vice-captain, Melbourne prop Robbie Kearns, and Sydney Roosters lock Luke Ricketson having retired from representative football, there are few other contenders for the captaincy. St George Illawarra five-eighth Trent Barrett is the most obvious alternative, followed by Knights back-rower Ben Kennedy, who is expected to take over the reins from Johns at Newcastle for the remainder of the season.

But both Kennedy and Barrett are battling injury, and there is also a view that Kimmorley would call the shots on the field anyway so he may as well have the (c) next to his name.

Blues coach Phil Gould said yesterday the captaincy was a matter for the NSWRL board. The directors wouldn't make a decision until the side was named.

Brisbane five-eighth Darren Lockyer will retain the Australian captaincy, although he is likely to play fullback against New Zealand to accommodate the inclusion of Barrett.

Lockyer said yesterday that he had sent Johns a text message after learning of his injury......."

With Johns out, I guess this was inevitable and good luck to Noddy for these honours, but how does everyone think we'll go without Noddy away on Origin duties?

Hopefully Sully can step up and do well at halfback. If he can repeat that great game he had against the Dragons last year, we should be right. :)

I wish Noddy all the best in his Rep endeavours. Sully is the obvious choice to peplace him and Peachey can lead us around the park. He will be a big loss for us prior to the Origins though he should be able to back up after the Test and Origins.

I wonder if Stevo and Bailey are likely to be picked as well. Then we are under the pump.

I think this is great news all round. Noddy plays his best footy when he's eyeing rep jumpers, and I honestly believe the Sharks will step up without him. So the whole team will continue to gain in confidence and then go to another level when Nod gets back on the paddock.

Sully will kill 'em.

PS. Gus is such a twat - his measured response is so typical and transparent. He'll never be happy until the every sky blue jersey is filled by a roosters player.

Good and bad news.

Great for Noddy and a smack in the face for all those who reckon he can't play under anyone except Opes

Bad for us because we need him.

Pretty good I hear...

Sully and Dally at half and 5/8 would be funny. Both small and hyper. I'd laugh. Oh and the team would get belted

If we lose Stevens it means we can start big Dale Newton! That would be a tremendous sight. And Peachey won't be leading us around because he'll be in Origin as well - Simmons or Merritt will be at fullback.

I wouldnt think Minichello has done anything to deserve losing the jumper, much as I would love to see Peach back in sky blue, and he is killing it at the moment.

We need him to lead us around the park while Noddy is playing for the blues anyway!

Daley,Williams and pearce were talking up Finch and Orford on Fox tonight and they were noting that the frog(Gould) does not like the playing style of Noddy

I love the Peach, but it would take the world for him to get Mini's spot.

Who knows what will happen between now and Origin?

If you had sat here a week ago and told me that Noddy would be the NSW halfback because Johns will do his cruciate, I would have laughed in your face.

Finch is a gimp. He offers absolutely nothing that any other halfback cant do. He's bland, he's boring, he doesnt stand out in the star studded Roosters line up. Sure he had a good game in round 2, but every dog has its day. To even compare him to a superstar like Kimmorley is an insult to fair minded league fans everywhere.

Orford is OK on his day as well but he's not a touch on Noddy. The only halves who compare to Kimmorley are Johns and Jones, and neither of them are going to get picked.

For all that though, I really doubt Kimmorley will get picked. Gould hates him and Kimmorley probably hates Gould. I'd like to know why that prick Gould has a mortgage on the NSW job, especially considering you wont hear any player (perhaps besides Fittler) say a good word about him. He is one hated man - just ask the Johns brothers.
