Tackles
Nathan Hindmarsh (Eels) 43 (and only 1 miss)
Daniel Wagon (Eels) 28
Michael Vella (Eels) 27 (0 missed tackles)
Nathan Cayless (Eels) 27
Adam Woolnough (Knights) 27
James Webster (Eels) 25

Vella was the Eels top metre getter with 119, Hindmarsh got 102
for the backs Burt 136 and Prince 116 led the way.

This is the 2nd week that Hindy has cracked the 40 tackles.

Eels made 305 tackles to the Knights 254
Parra completed 30 from 41 sets (73%) up on the 60% for the opening 2 weeks. Parramatta missed 27 tackles to the Knights 16.

What that tells me is

- Knights had a lot more ball while close to 60% of it on a roughish guess.
- The handling is getting better but still has a long way to go
- Still way to many missed tackles and most coming from mis-reads in defence
- Hindy is a legend

Things are getting better but can still be improved on a lot more.

to have 2 wins from the opening 3 games and playing at I'd say not even 70% capacity means that in theory at least once the Eels improve and start tightening the defence and holding the ball more then it could look very good for future games.

Fitness - its all about fitness.....our missed tackles, esp those right on our line, are the result of a lack of fitness.

The guys get tired and don't have enough in the tank to jump up and make important tackles near the line.....that's what separates the Roosters from everyone else (shit, I sound like Gus :? ....but its true).

That's three weeks in a row we've topped 300 tackles, just goes to show how often we're getting three and four men into the tackle to drive the opposition backwards.

Newcastle still scored some of the softest of tries i've seen last night, im sure Brian is working on the marker defense but it was again exposed last night.....what 3 of Newcastles tries where as soft as butter!

Markers work

I disagree.

I think it is our strategy.

Clearly, with our new defence, the idea is to rush up and cut off options, and be overly agressive. But when we get inside our own ten, our defense needs to move off the line, but then slide. At the moment, our markers and outisde backs are rushing off leaving holes around the ruck, and holes 3 or 4 in from the wing which works fine in the middle of the ground, as you can adjust to any half breaks, but on your goal line, a miss and your gone.

Caylo was looking really good for periods in the game but when he gets tired he really falls off the rails. BS should keep a closer eye on it and give him a breather sooner rather than later. He obviously wants to lift his game time but this won't happen over night.
