Agreed. But there's no point dwelling on the past. Good luck to him, and please let's avoid another "Smithy must go" thread.

Quite simply at the time Tonga was behind players like Lex,Lyon etc and felt he needed to move on, ahhh the joys of hindsight

There were 2 international centres in front of him. He couldve been huge here as well, but unfortunalty he did what any otehr person would do.

I watched all the PL games and Tonga was killing it. He got something like 25 trys last season in PL let alone the 4 he scored for us.

There is no use of us talking about this anymore it just gives the shits more sooo lets move on and try to find someone better than him.

PL is different from firsts. You know that. Personally i wouldve had tonga. SInce 2001 Freshy has only showed poor form.

Vaealiki was good in 2001....ok

in 2002 & 2003 he was not as good as Tonga, I would have kept Tonga ahead of every one in the backline apart from Lyon, the coach saw it differently #-o

His first grade form at Parramatta was far from great. If he wasn't performing in first grade we couldn't expect him to be retained ahead of David Vaealiki and Jamie Lyon, especially when they were both under contract.

His defence in first grade had yet to develop enough at Parra. It has now.
He left us because he was offered regular first grade, which at the time he couldn't be offered at Parra. Good luck to Willie, he's got a fine future.

yes i did realise that he was behind lyon and dave but what a shame we did know before he left, if jamie had told us when he started feeling like this we would have had the chanc to keep him....

He played all over tate yesterday and wouldn't mind betting he will be playing for australia at the years end......

Lyon wrecked any chance of ours this this. If he had said he didnt want to play instead of ebing greedy and getting paid out for playing one game Tonga wouldve stayed.

Yeah? You know that for a fact that Tonga only left because Lyon was at the club? Sort of makes Tonga the same type of person as Lyon, who only left because of Smith?

You are just like the rest - you loved Lyon like you did Hindy before he left!

Tonga didn't have the right attitude. Sure, he had Lyon and Vaealiki in front of him at Parramatta, but if he had the right mindset, he could have been determined to play his way into Firsts. There is only so long even Brian can deny talent.

But we have Ben Smith anyway! :D

Haven't seen much of him in attack, but:

* He always supported Hindy or anyone else when they madea break or half-break

* His defence was spot on; how many tries did he save by pushing his man into touch

* He's pacey

* He's strong

* HE'S HUGE; he'll walk all over Tonga

You're not like the rest?

You didn't love Lyon?

He was my personal favourite (yes, even over Hindy). He was just so incredibly talented. He was a great bloke too.

But since then, the way things have been handled and the way he has carried himself and what he did to the club I adore is inexcusable.

I can't say I hate him, but I have no respect for him anymore.

Part of me would love him back at Parra because of his talent, but the other part would say, "No. I couldn't even pretend to like him now."

What a piece of rubbish. The circumstances are completely diferent. I loved Lyon and was proud to have such a talented player at my club, however the way he has handled himself towards this club, the fans, and most importantly his team-mates has meants I have lost all respect for him. I'm sure everyone else is the same.

Whatever the reasons, given tonga was out of contract, makes it a tad different I would think

Do you know for CERTAIN that Tonga left because of Smith - without baseless rumour or innuendo to back it up?

Lyon walked out on a contract - FACT. Regardless of how, when, where and why he did he still screwed the club and his team mates over. At least others that have left in the past have managed to put aside any differences and play for the team. He has now managed to screw over his manager Alan Gainey. Any club that was interested in him for next season in the NRL is now having second thoughts based on his indecision and the fact he is jumping from manager to manager. If he just wants to be able to pay his mortgage than send him out to get a real job.

Tonga has stated he left for an opportunity - FACT. Aside from a few "rumours" he has publically stated that he did not see an opportunity at the Eels behind Lyon and Vaealiki - which in hindsight and as far as contracts went wasn't a great deal financially for him. We don't know if Lyon had of made his decision before Tonga signed with the Dogs if he would of stayed under Smith for this season.
