Someone stole my identity - Terry Leabeater

By Nick Walshaw | April 14, 2009 12:00am

IT WAS with a weary sense of deja vu that Parramatta legend Terry Leabeater handed his licence to police on Saturday after passing a random breath test, to be told it had long been cancelled and he would be charged with driving without a licence.

Leabeater, who is standing on Ray Price's 3P ticket for election to the board of the Parramatta Leagues Club this month, faces Picton Court on May 26 - when he will argue for the umpteenth time, he says, that he is still being penalised for falling victim to ID theft more than a decade ago.

"It's an ongoing thing that happened years ago and it keeps coming back," a rueful Leabeater told Sport Confidential yesterday. "I had identity theft in the 1990s and I thought it was all cleared up, but the state debt recovery keep putting it back on.

"I had a car stolen with a briefcase in it - it's haunted me for years and I thought it was all over but obviously not. Even at Westpac in Terrigal they call me Dead Man Walking, because apparently I'm dead."

Leabeater maintains that he has tried on numerous occasions to have records across myriad government departments corrected, but is adamant he will be able yet again to prove he is in the right. He says: "I've had to do it before in court - one judge didn't want to listen so I appealed (that decision) and won that . . . have you tried dealing with three government departments? It's not fault of the police - they can only go by what comes up on the screen."

This is why the current board need to be voted out. No ideas... just rubbishing the oppositions personal lives.

Have we heard one policy from the current LC board to justify their re-election??

Where in this article does DF get a guernsey, I think it was newsworthy given the profile that 3P have tracked in the media.

"Leabeater, who is standing on Ray Price's 3P ticket for election to the board of the Parramatta Leagues Club this month".

Nick, Terry is NOT standing for election to the L C Board...From what I can gather Terry would be a candidate for CEO of the Club...if it (3P) gets control and ousts Fitzy.
That's how I interpret the push from 3P group.

No that is incorrect, I am not standing for CEO, and have never had that vision of grandeur. Not qualified to do the job in the leagues club, and I personally believe the Football Club CEO should be totally separate positions. Its a shame a bloke like Tony Zappia was let go.
As far as my personal situation is concerned, if they think they are going to win by attacking me from here on in, well thats a sad day for the club and I dare say a very good reason why the club is in trouble. All I want is change to turn this club around.

Unfortunately, Terry is one of half a million Australians in the last year to be affected by the fastest growing crime in Australia; identity theft. It's estimated it costs the economy around $1B dollars a year. See http://www.stopidtheft.com.au/downloads/celeb-release.pdf

Also, the victims of identity theft bear significant financial and emotional costs in regaining their identity and credit ratings. http://www.ag.gov.au/www/agd/agd.nsf/page/Crimeprevention_Identitysecurity#q1

As someone that used to work in a government field involving identity fraud I understand what Terry is going through.

Sometimes the problem can be sorted out fairly quickly. I have also seen many cases linger on for years tormenting those involved.

Terry's case is one of half a million others right now around the country.

Hopefully the media exposure of his problem will alert the authorities to finally sort it out!

How on earth can they justify their re-election when you look at the past record? It is indefencible. They are playing to their strength. Smear is all they have left.

Anything that can be seen as negative to the 3P camp must be coming from DF according to some, it seems they have there dislike for DF and anything they can possibly link to paint him as the anti-christ they will use.

That is just how I interpreted your involvement, Terry, and I certainly was not having a go at you. Good luck to you for wanting to change the Club around. Everyone wants the Eels to be a success. From the CEO to the gate keepers at the Stadium. I think everyone has that desire. No-one who has followed the Club, or been involved with the Club would want any different. I think you could be paranoid about 'everyone is out to get me'

BTW - Do you really see the CEO as a position of "grandeur"..and do you agree that Denis is qualified to be the CEO?

I can't see how the current Board of the PLC is attacking you in regard to this matter. It seems to be a police matter to me..what has it to do with the PLC elections when you are not a candidate - or, as you have pointed out, not chasing the position of CEO.

I am not a member of the PLC, and I can't vote.

Monty I have had more big hits than Shirley Bassey since becoming involved, but I will stick it out as promised and no, there are no paranoid thoughts mate, as I expected as much rubbish after the FC elections.
The point I was making was that I personally had no vision of granduer in being CEO. Yes Denis is very qualified, and I supported him till last year, but it is time for change. Actually my problem is not a police matter as they can only act on the information in front of them, my problem stems from other areas, and I have been working to rectify that as we speak.
No the board has not attacked me on this matter directly, but their little attack dog on radio has done it on their behalf, and he keeps bringing up my association with 3P, and that Denis is the man to pull the club out of this situation. Denis would not have given him a nudge to give me a kicking would he Monty? Mate I am big enough and ugly enough to cop what he throws, but they would be mistaken if they think I am going away and wont react in spades, but whilst they is doing that the real issues are getting snowed under. Monty when Denis tells a player his time is up, most would say he is right, if they were honest with themselves, and it is not personal from Denis, it is a business decision on behalf of the club. Why is it then that he attacks peoples credibility from day one when this ticket, FC & LC was announced, why would he not be focusing on telling members his plans for the next 5 years. Denis was a great thing for this club for a long time, but he has had 30 years and this club is at a crossroad, and change has to be made. It was not personal in our bid for change........at least I thought it was'nt. Neither Denis or myself are running for the board, and we are at the moment the main focus, inane politics dont you think mate.

It is my personal problem, and I will sort it. It is not Denis's problem, Ray Hadley's problem or 3P's problem.

Exactly. Which makes me wonder why people have to drag up sh*t like this to denegrate another person.
3P may not have been private in their motivation for the anti Fitzgerald campaign, but it has all been regarding his personal performance in running the club. They have not lowered themselves to divulge his private activities. This just smacks of the lowest form of politics, and desperation.

I have no time for Ray Hadley..and less time for the leader of the 3P cheer squad Josh Massoud. In my opinion they are, at best, 'sh*t slingers' , and, at worst, people who rely on misfortune to create stories. Good luck with your Court case.
It is your business - noone else's, especially not Ray Hadley - or the newspapers - or the contributers to this forum.

Exactly. I've never been interested in this story from the moment it surfaced. Irrelevant to anything, but that's the state of our media as a whole really.

That's true and it's a sad state of affairs of public opinion these days as well, hence the success of rubbish like New Idea, and shows like A Current Affair and Today Tonight.
I can't believe ANYONE gave it the time of day on this forum, but certain posters obviously saw it as important. Really sad, in all honesty.

It'll be a dirty campaign from both sides Suit. Did you expect anything different ?
