Someone stole my identity - Terry Leabeater
By Nick Walshaw | April 14, 2009 12:00am
IT WAS with a weary sense of deja vu that Parramatta legend Terry Leabeater handed his licence to police on Saturday after passing a random breath test, to be told it had long been cancelled and he would be charged with driving without a licence.
Leabeater, who is standing on Ray Price's 3P ticket for election to the board of the Parramatta Leagues Club this month, faces Picton Court on May 26 - when he will argue for the umpteenth time, he says, that he is still being penalised for falling victim to ID theft more than a decade ago.
"It's an ongoing thing that happened years ago and it keeps coming back," a rueful Leabeater told Sport Confidential yesterday. "I had identity theft in the 1990s and I thought it was all cleared up, but the state debt recovery keep putting it back on.
"I had a car stolen with a briefcase in it - it's haunted me for years and I thought it was all over but obviously not. Even at Westpac in Terrigal they call me Dead Man Walking, because apparently I'm dead."
Leabeater maintains that he has tried on numerous occasions to have records across myriad government departments corrected, but is adamant he will be able yet again to prove he is in the right. He says: "I've had to do it before in court - one judge didn't want to listen so I appealed (that decision) and won that . . . have you tried dealing with three government departments? It's not fault of the police - they can only go by what comes up on the screen."
